Contextualization
The Southern Region of Brazil is composed of the states of Paraná, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul. It is a region of great economic importance for the country, standing out in agriculture, industry, and services. This region presents a rich geography, with different biomes coexisting in a space marked by intense economic integration.
The economy of the Southern Region is strongly characterized by the presence of small and medium-sized enterprises, many of them family-owned. The diversity of agricultural production, ranging from temperate climate products such as wine and apples to tropical products like soybeans and corn, makes this region one of the most productive in Brazil. The industry is also quite diversified, with a focus on the production of footwear, furniture, metal-mechanics, and agribusiness.
The Southern Region also has three important biomes: Atlantic Forest, Pampa, and Araucaria. The Atlantic Forest biome, one of the richest and most threatened in the world, covers most of Paraná and a part of Santa Catarina. The Pampa biome, which extends throughout Rio Grande do Sul, presents a grassland vegetation with a great richness of species and high value for livestock farming. The Araucaria biome, typical of high-altitude regions, is marked by the presence of Araucaria trees, which provide pine nuts, the basis for various typical recipes of the region.
Importance
The economic integration of the Southern Region is fundamental for Brazil's development and is strongly linked to the conservation of its biomes. Sustainable exploitation of natural resources, valorization, and promotion of local productive chains are essential to ensure the balance between economic development and environmental preservation.
This issue is especially relevant in the contemporary world, characterized by a growing concern for the balance between economic development and environmental sustainability. In this sense, the Southern Region offers an important laboratory for understanding and improving sustainable economic practices.
Practical Activity: "Exploring the Southern Region: Integrating Economy and Biomes"
Project Objective
To understand the relationships between the economy and the biomes of the Southern Region, highlighting the importance of sustainability and biological preservation for regional economic development.
Detailed Project Description
Each group (composed of 3 to 5 students) will represent Paraná, Santa Catarina, or Rio Grande do Sul. They will have the mission of developing an "Ecological-Economic Tourist Route" of the state they represent, aligning the knowledge of the biomes and economic activities developed there.
Required Materials
- Computer with internet access;
- Paper and pen for notes;
- Presentation software (PowerPoint, Google Slides, etc.);
- Maps of the Southern Region available in textbooks or on the internet.
Step by Step
-
Research: The group should research and study the state they represent, focusing on its main biomes and economic activities. The resources indicated in the "Resources" section can be a good starting point.
-
Route Creation: Based on the research, the group should plan a route that passes through the main biomes of the state and highlights the economic activities developed there. Each stop on the route should have a brief description of the biome, the economic activities of the location, and the relationship between them.
-
Presentation Development: The group should develop a presentation containing the route and the descriptions of each stop. The presentation should be visually appealing and informative, including images, maps, and graphics.
-
Route Presentation: Each group will present their route to the teacher and the class, explaining the relationship between the biomes and the economy of the state they represent.
-
Report Writing: After the presentation, the group should write a detailed report explaining the project and the results obtained.
Project Deliverables
-
Presentation of the ecological-economic tourist route: Each group must deliver the slide presentation that will be presented to the class and the teacher. The presentation should be visually appealing and informative, including detailed descriptions of the different biomes and economic activities of the state, as well as the relationship between them.
-
Written Document: After the presentation, the group should write a report containing, but not limited to, four main topics: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography used.
a. Introduction: Students should contextualize the state represented, the objective of the route, and its relevance.
b. Development: Students should describe the created route, the explored biomes, and the associated economic activities. Additionally, they should explain the relationship between the biomes and the economic activities of each location on the route.
c. Conclusions: Students should summarize the main points of the project, emphasizing the learnings and conclusions drawn. They should reflect on the importance of preserving biomes for sustainable economic development.
d. Bibliography: Students should indicate the sources used to develop the project.
The project should take two to four hours per student to complete and must be delivered within one week from the start date.
