Rocks are fundamental components of geomorphological studies. There are three main types of rocks: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. Igneous rocks form from the cooling and solidification of magma; sedimentary rocks are formed by the deposition of sediments, which can be fossils, grains from existing rocks, or mineral precipitation from water; and metamorphic rocks are formed by the modification of an existing rock due to pressure, temperature, or chemical reactions.

Relief forms and rock types are key factors influencing human occupation and exploitation of environments. Geomorphology directly impacts human activities such as urbanization, agriculture, mining, and tourism. For example, fertile alluvial plains like the Nile River Valley favor agriculture, while mountainous areas with igneous rocks, such as the Andes Mountains, are rich in valuable minerals for mining.

Furthermore, understanding geomorphology can provide insights for natural resource management and the mitigation of natural disaster risks. For instance, analyzing relief structures can assist in planning infrastructures to prevent floods and landslides.

Project Objective:

The project's objective is to allow students to apply their theoretical knowledge of geomorphology and rocks in a practical scenario. Students should analyze a geographically relevant local or global area, identify its main relief features and rocks, investigate human occupation and economic activities in the area, and assess the possible environmental impacts of these activities.

Detailed Project Description:

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members, and each group will select an area of interest for study. The groups should use different research sources, including books, scientific articles, reliable websites, and maps, to gather information about the relief features and rock types of the chosen area, as well as about human occupation and economic activities taking place there. They should also identify and discuss the environmental impacts of these activities, based on the area's geological composition.

Required Materials:

  • Internet access for information and image research.
  • Physical and geological maps of the study area.
  • Paper, pens, and markers to create infographics and visualizations of the collected data.
  • Presentation software (such as PowerPoint, Google Slides, or Prezi) to present the research results.

Detailed Step-by-Step Guide for Activity Execution:

1. Group definition and organization and selection of the study area.

2. Research on the relief features and rock types in the chosen area.

3. Investigation of human occupation and economic activities in the study area. How are these activities affected by the area's geomorphology?

4. Evaluation of the environmental impacts of human activities in the area, considering its geological composition.

5. Creation of infographics and visualizations to visually represent the collected information.

6. Preparation of a presentation to share the research results with the class.

7. Writing a final report detailing the entire process, from the selection of the study area to the conclusions about the environmental impacts of human activities.

Project Deliverables:

After completing the above steps, the groups will deliver:

  1. Slide or video presentation: Students should prepare a presentation to share the project results with the class. This includes the information they gathered, the infographics and visualizations they created, and the conclusions they drew from their research.

  2. Written report: This document should include the following topics:

    • Introduction: Here, students should introduce the selected study area, justify why they chose it, and explain the relevance of studying geomorphology to understand that area.
    • Development: In this section, students should explain the process they followed to collect their information, detail the relief features and rock types in the area, describe human occupation and economic activities, and discuss the environmental impacts of these activities. They should also include the infographics and visualizations they created to visually represent their findings.
    • Conclusion: Students should provide a critical analysis of the study results. What were the main learnings? What impacts do the geological characteristics have on human activities in the area? How do these activities affect the local environment?
    • Bibliography: Students should cite all information sources used during the project, including books, articles, websites, and maps.
