Theoretical Introduction

Africa is a continent of vast cultural, geographical, and historical diversity with a rich and complex history that extends from the beginning of humanity to the modern world. Unfortunately, this history has often been told in ways that minimize the complexity and humanity of African people. This project, 'Africa in the Globalized World 2', seeks to illuminate the complexity of the African experience and highlight the importance of Africa in the globalized world.

The globalized world can be characterized by connectivity and interdependence at economic, political, and cultural levels. Africa, like all continents, is deeply affected by these phenomena. This project will explore issues such as the inequalities between Africa and the 'West' in terms of the global economy, the influence and cultural exchange between Africa and the world, and the environmental issues affecting the African continent.

Africa is a continent that has been historically marginalized and exploited in the global economy. This project will examine the historical circumstances that have led to this current position, as well as the opportunities and challenges that globalization offers to Africa. The issue of global inequality is a geographical issue, but also a matter of history, politics, and economics, making this project interdisciplinary.

Understanding Africa's position in the globalized world is essential to grasp contemporary global dynamics. Africa is a continent of great geographical importance due to its location, natural resources, and environmental diversity. Moreover, Africa is home to over one billion people, each with their own unique and valid experience of the world.

Globalization has profoundly different effects in different parts of the world. It is essential to understand how different parts of the world, such as Africa, are affected by globalization to have a comprehensive understanding of these complex processes. Furthermore, Africa is often portrayed in a simplistic and stereotyped manner in the media and popular culture. This project will encourage students to question these narratives and develop a more nuanced and comprehensive understanding of Africa's role in the globalized world.

Activity Title: Globalized Africa: A Multimedia Immersion

Project Objective

The activity aims to build a deep and multifaceted understanding of Africa in the globalized world.

Detailed Project Description

This project is a multidisciplinary study (Geography, History, Economics, and Arts) about Africa in the era of globalization. It will consist of creating a multimedia documentary that includes different types of materials: maps, graphics, interviews, videos, photographs, and more. This documentary should explore four main subthemes:

1. Africa and the global economy
2. Africa and global culture
3. Africa and the global environment
4. Africa and global politics

Each group of students will be responsible for a subtheme, and they must create a 15-20 minute multimedia documentary. The analysis and discussion of each subtheme will require a comprehensive and critical investigation of sources, as well as the ability to synthesize and present information clearly, accurately, and engagingly.

Required Materials

Students will need a computer or tablet with internet access, video editing software (several free options available online), a camera (a smartphone may be sufficient), and a microphone for interviews.

Detailed Activity Steps

1. Research: Each group must conduct in-depth research on their subtheme. This should include reading academic texts, watching existing documentaries, consulting reliable online sources, and, if possible, interviewing field experts.

2. Planning: Next, each group should plan their documentary. This should include drafting a script, deciding on what type of media to include (e.g., photographs, graphics, interviews), and delegating tasks among group members.

3. Production: Students should then produce their documentary. This should include recording interviews, capturing photographs or videos, and creating graphics or maps.

4. Editing: Finally, students should edit all elements together to create the final documentary.

5. Presentation and Discussion: Each group will present their documentary to the class. After each presentation, there will be a classroom discussion on the documentary's theme.

6. Report: Once the documentary is completed, students must prepare a detailed report that includes an introduction to their subtheme, a discussion of key concepts and related theories, a detailed description of the methodology used to create the documentary, and their conclusions. Additionally, each report must include a complete list of all sources consulted during the research and production of the documentary.

Project Deliverables

Students must submit the multimedia documentary along with a written project report. The report should be organized as follows:

• Introduction: The student must contextualize their respective subtheme, its relevance and real-world application, as well as the purpose of this document.

• Development: The student must explain the key concepts, the documentary creation process, the sources used, and the conclusions drawn from the subtheme.

• Conclusion: Each student must conclude the report by addressing the main learning points, the challenges encountered, and the proposed solutions.

• Bibliography: The student must indicate and correctly cite all sources used for the project, following ABNT standards.

Before the final submission, students must carefully review their work to ensure it meets all project requirements.
