Contextualization

The term 'New World Order' is widely used to refer to any period of history after an event or series of globally significant events. In our case, we refer to the current historical period post-Cold War, which saw the end of bipolarity and the emergence of a new global structure.

The New World Order brought about significant political, economic, and social changes. The end of bipolarity led to the emergence of new actors on the global stage, such as the European Union and China, while power relations among states were profoundly altered. In economic terms, accelerated globalization and neoliberalism became key elements of the new order. Last but not least, social changes, such as increased human mobility and the diffusion of digital technology, are also part of this scenario.

This period of rapid change has brought many challenges. From security issues like global terrorism to economic problems like inequality and the global financial crisis. It has also raised important questions about the role of nation-states in an increasingly globalized and interconnected world. The aim of this project is to help better understand this complex scenario and the forces shaping it.

Importance of the Study

The New World Order is of great relevance to our understanding of geopolitics and contemporary international relations. By studying this topic, students will have the opportunity to deeply understand the global processes that directly affect their daily lives.

This project will not only deepen their knowledge in Geography but also provide a broader perspective, connecting with History and Social Sciences. The New World Order cannot be understood without an analysis of how historical past has shaped the present, and how current social and political forces can impact the future.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: International Conference Simulation

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to simulate an international conference where each group will represent a country or bloc of countries relevant in the New World Order. The groups will discuss and negotiate crucial current issues (e.g. climate change, immigration, nuclear disarmament, etc.), always considering the interests and positions of the countries they represent.

Detailed Project Description

Each group will represent a country or bloc of countries from the New World Order. These groups will have to deeply research the geopolitics, economy, and international relations of the country/bloc they are representing, considering the post-Cold War events. Part of the research can be done using the suggested sources. To ensure the quality of the work, each group should consist of 3 to 5 students, and the project will last for four weeks.

• Internet access for research
• Notebook for notes
• Presentation resources (Whiteboard, Cardboard, Post-its, Colored pens, Projector, etc.)

Step-by-Step Guide for the Activity

1. Group division and definition of countries/blocs to be represented. The division of countries should be done equitably, ensuring that all groups will have proportional challenges.

2. Research on the country/bloc of countries. There should be a focus on four central topics:

   • History and geopolitics of the country after the end of the Cold War
   • Economy of the country/bloc of countries
   • International relations and position on global issues
   • Society and culture of the country/bloc of countries

3. Each group must prepare a 15-minute speech presenting their country/bloc of countries and their position on the discussed global issues.

4. Conducting the conference simulation. Each group will present the prepared speech. After all presentations, a debate on possible solutions to global issues will begin.

5. Writing the final report on the event. Each group must prepare a report describing the experience, the acquired learning, the conclusions reached, and the bibliography used.

Project Deliverables

The project deliverables are divided into two parts:

• The oral presentation during the conference simulation;
• The report at the end of the activity.

The presentation must be done in person during the simulation and should reflect the group's research and understanding of the country or bloc of countries represented.

The report should follow the format of a document with the following topics:

1. Introduction: the group must present the country/bloc of countries and the global issues addressed;
2. Development: the group must detail the research conducted and the preparation process for the simulation;
3. Conclusions: the group must discuss what they learned from the project, both about the New World Order and about teamwork and negotiation skills;
4. Bibliography: the group must cite all sources of information used during the research.

The report will be the written evidence of the work the group has done and must be submitted one week after the simulation. It should be done collaboratively and reflect the learning of all group members.
