Context
Geomorphology is the science that studies landforms, that is, the forms of the Earth's surface, and organizes these forms into categories. Considered an important subdivision of Physical Geography, it analyzes the processes and agents that form and transform the relief, involving the action of gravity, water, wind, and seismic activities, as well as the influence of rocks, which determine the structure that the relief will assume.
Rocks, which are the materials that form the Earth's crust, have different origins and types, being classified as igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. Each type has its own form of formation and distinct characteristics that influence the shape and strength of the relief. In addition, each rock contains a geological history that can be interpreted from its characteristics.
Importance of Geomorphology
Understanding geomorphology and rock structure is essential to understand the environment in which we are inserted. The configuration of the landform has a direct influence on the way that humans organize themselves, whether in population distribution, insertion of economic activities, or in the infrastructure of cities. In addition, this understanding is essential to prevent and manage natural disasters, such as erosion, landslides, and earthquakes.
Rocks, in turn, are the basis for many economic activities, such as mining, production of construction materials, and oil exploration. In addition, the study of rocks helps to understand the processes of formation of the Earth, being possible, for example, to estimate the age of rock formations through radiometric dating.

Practical Activity
Title of the Activity: Landform and Rock Analysis: A Geographic Adventure
Project Objective
The objective is to stimulate students to explore and deepen their knowledge in geomorphology and types of rocks, correlating them with the environment in which they live. It also seeks to promote collaboration, time management, problem solving, creative thinking and the practice of scientific writing.
Detailed Description of the Project
The groups will be of 3 to 5 students and must map and analyze the local geomorphology, identifying and describing the types of rocks present in the relief of the region in which they reside.
Necessary Materials
- Internet access for research
- Camera or cell phone to document observations
- Magnifying glass to examine rocks
- Drawing material or drawing software to draw an illustrative diagram
- Safety materials (helmet, gloves, boots), if necessary to visit places with rocks
Step-by-Step of the Activity
Preliminary Research (Duration: 1 hour)
- As a group, research the geomorphology and rock types of your locality (city, neighborhood, etc.). Write down the main characteristics of the relief and the types of rocks found.
Field Analysis (Duration: 2 hours)
- Take a safe walk around your locality to identify the landforms and collect some rock samples. Remember to take your camera or cell phone to document your observations.
- Take photos of the different landforms and the collected rocks.
Report Preparation (Duration: 1 hour)
- Based on your observations and research, prepare a report that should contain:
- Introduction: Describe the importance of Geomorphology and Rock Types, the project's objective, and its relevance.
- Development: Explain the theory behind the project's central topics and the activity in detail. Describe the characteristics of the relief and the rock types of your locality, correlating with the theory studied. Describe the methodology used and present the photos taken and the illustrative diagram prepared. Discuss the results obtained.
- Conclusions: Conclude the work by revisiting your main points, explaining the learning obtained and the conclusions drawn about the project.
- Bibliography: List the sources used in the research.
Project Presentation (Duration: 1 hour)
- Prepare a presentation to share your results with the class. The presentation can be done in slide format, video, or any other way you prefer.
Project Final Product
- Text report containing Introduction, Development, Conclusions and Bibliography.
- Photos of the different landforms and the collected rocks.
- Illustrative diagram of the relief and the main rocks found.
- Presentation of the results to the class.
