Contextualization

Latin America, due to its geographical, historical, social, and political context, has always been a stage for important political-ideological movements and experiments. Several countries in this region experienced left-wing governments during the 20th and 21st centuries, whose proposals and results sparked intense and controversial debates. Therefore, studying this topic allows us to reflect on political, ideological, economic, and social issues of great complexity and relevance.

What are left-wing governments?

In essence, left-wing governments are based on the ideals of social justice and equality. They propose a more pronounced state intervention in the economy to reduce social inequalities, as well as advocate for labor rights, the guarantee of public services, and a more equitable distribution of wealth. It is worth noting that the left is diverse and encompasses different schools of thought, ranging from social democrats, socialists, to communists, among others.

Historical Context

From the 1990s onwards, and especially in the early 21st century, Latin America experienced the so-called 'pink tide,' with the rise of several left and center-left governments, such as Hugo Chávez in Venezuela, Lula in Brazil, and Evo Morales in Bolivia. This period was marked by the implementation of social inclusion policies, nationalization of companies and natural resources, increased state participation in the economy, among other actions. However, there were also criticisms and issues, ranging from the lack of economic sustainability of some policies to allegations of authoritarianism and corruption.

Studying left-wing governments in Latin America allows us to better understand our continent, its political dynamics, social contradictions, and provides a reflection on development models and the issue of social justice.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: 'Mapping Leftist Governments in Latin America.'

Project Objective:

The project aims to allow students to deepen their knowledge and understanding of left-wing governments in Latin America, their proposals, achievements, challenges, and controversies. Additionally, the activity aims to stimulate teamwork, research, critical analysis, oral and written presentation, as well as synthesis skills and the use of visual and technological resources.

Detailed Project Description:

The project will be carried out by groups of 3 to 5 students, and each group should focus on a Latin American country that has experienced left-wing governments in the 21st century. The project will be divided into the following stages:

1. Research: Students should research the left-wing government of the chosen country, addressing topics such as historical context, implemented policies, economic, social, and environmental impacts, criticisms and controversies, among others.

2. Mind Map: Students should produce a mind map that synthesizes the researched information. This mind map should be created using a digital platform of the students' choice (such as MindMeister, XMind, Canva, among others), allowing them to work with visual resources and digital media.

3. Oral Presentation: Each group should present the results of their research to the class, using the developed mind map.

4. Written Document: After the presentation, students should produce a written report, addressing the context, the researched information, the conclusions drawn, and the bibliography used.

Required Materials:

• Internet access for research.
• Computer or smartphone for mind map creation.
• Presentation materials (projector if necessary).

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution:

1. Students will form groups and choose a country for investigation.
2. Once done, the groups will start researching the left-wing government of the chosen country, seeking varied and reliable sources.
3. After the research phase, students should organize the obtained information and develop a mind map that synthesizes the main points.
4. Each group will make an oral presentation to the class, presenting their research findings and explaining the mind map.
5. After the presentation, groups should produce a written report structured in Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography, about the work done and the research findings.

Project Deliverables:

The project will have the following deliverables:

• The digital Mind Map, which should be sent to the teacher before the presentation.
• The Oral Presentation, to be held in the classroom.
• The Written Document, to be submitted within a week after the presentation.

In the Written Document, the introduction should contextualize the choice of the country and the relevance of the topic. In the development, students should present the information obtained in the research, the mind map creation process, and the work methodology. In the conclusion, they should summarize the acquired learnings, the conclusions drawn, and the reflection on the studied topic. Finally, the bibliography should list all sources consulted during the project execution.
