Contextualization
Studying socialism in Asia is essential for understanding some of the key political and social events of the 20th century and their implications in the contemporary world. From Mao Zedong, leader of the Chinese Revolution and founder of the People's Republic of China, to Kim Il-sung, founder and first leader of North Korea, as well as the long and complex trajectory of Vietnam under the socialist regime, the Asian continent has much to teach us about this political ideology.
Socialism proposes that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned and controlled by the workers, in order to ensure that the fruits of labor are shared by all. In practice, however, in most socialist countries in 20th century Asia, power was centralized in the hands of the state, which became the main economic agent.
Introduction
Studying socialism in Asia, therefore, is not only about learning a political ideology, but also exploring issues of economy, history, geography, and human rights. For example, in China, the forced collectivization of agriculture during Mao's Great Leap Forward period resulted in one of the greatest famines in history. Understanding this event requires an understanding of both socialist theory and the geography and economy of rural China.
Furthermore, the tension between the two Koreas, divided after World War II between a socialist regime in the north and a capitalist one in the south, is a significant case study on the impacts of political and ideological borders on people's lives. Similarly, Mexico's history under the socialist regime provides valuable insights into the struggles and challenges faced by developing countries in the pursuit of social and economic justice.
With this project, we hope you gain a deeper understanding of socialism as theory and practice, as well as its implementation and impact in Asia. We hope this study offers you a new perspective on the political, economic, and social complexities of this diverse and dynamic continent.
To carry out this project, you can rely on the following resources:
- Book: 'Asian Socialism: A Brief Introduction' (Publisher: Imaginar, Author: Daniel Aarão Reis)
- Articles from the Journal of Political Economy on the socialist model in Asia.
- Documentaries available on YouTube (e.g. 'The History of China', 'The History of North Korea').
- Articles on the internet, with a special recommendation to consult the Le Monde Diplomatique Brasil website, which has a vast archive on the subject.
Practical Activity - 'Mapping Socialism in Asia'
Project Objective
The objective of this activity is to provide students with a deeper understanding of socialism in Asia through a focused case study. They will conduct a research project on the implementation of socialism in an Asian country of their choice, focusing on specific topics such as economy, political borders, population conflicts, and forms of violence.
Project Description
Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people. Each group will choose an Asian country where socialism was implemented from the 20th century to the present. The goal will be to investigate the history and impact of socialism in that country, from the initial implementation to the present.
Required Materials
- History and Geography books on socialism in Asia
- Internet access for additional research
- Paper or digital platform for presenting the results
Step by Step
-
Country Selection: Each group must choose an Asian country where socialism was implemented. It is important for students to justify their choice, explaining why the country is relevant for the study of socialism in Asia.
-
Background Research: Students should conduct in-depth research on the chosen country. This includes investigating the implementation of socialism in the country, the factors that led to this implementation, and the resulting economic, social, and political changes. This should also include identifying population conflicts and forms of violence that arose during that time.
-
Focus on Economy: A critical aspect of the project is investigating how the economy of that country was affected by the implementation of socialism. This includes analyzing the economic system before and after implementation, and identifying any changes in areas such as food production, industry, and employment.
-
Creation of a Map: As part of the project, students should create a visual map of the chosen country highlighting key aspects of its economy, politics, and society under the socialist regime. This map can be made in the format that students prefer (digital or physical).
-
Final Report: Based on their research and mapping, each group should produce a final report describing their findings.
Project Deliverables and Writing the Written Document
The main deliverable of the project is the final report. This document should be structured as follows:
-
Introduction: Description of the chosen country and justification for the choice. Brief explanation of the relevance of socialism in the country to the global history of socialism.
-
Development: Detailed description of the research conducted, explanation of the mapping process, detailed description of the changes resulting from the implementation of socialism, with a special focus on the economy, population conflicts, and forms of violence.
-
Conclusions: Reflections on the impact of socialism in the chosen country and how this study expanded students' knowledge of socialism in Asia.
-
Bibliography: References to all sources used in the research.
Students should be encouraged to see the project as an opportunity to develop their research, critical analysis, teamwork, and communication skills.
