Contextualization
Relief is the shape of the Earth's surface, resulting from endogenous actions, which are caused by the Earth's interior, and exogenous actions, coming from the exterior of the Earth's crust. Knowledge about relief is of great importance, as it directly interferes with matters such as climate, types of vegetation, soil composition, among other aspects that influence human life.
Relief is constantly changing. Understanding these variations and the characteristics of each type of relief helps us to understand the geographical space and human relationships with this environment, opening doors for discussions about territory occupation, sustainability, resource exploitation, and environmental impacts.
Theory
In theoretical terms, relief has several forming and modeling agents, which are divided into two groups: internal (endogenous) and external (exogenous) agents. Internal agents are responsible for the formation of relief, acting horizontally and vertically and include plate tectonics, volcanism, and seismic activity. On the other hand, external agents, responsible for the modeling of relief, act on the Earth's surface and are influenced by the climate. In this group, we have the action of water, wind, ice, and temperature.
In turn, terrestrial relief is divided into three main types: plain, plateau, and mountain. Each of these types has specific characteristics and can be found in different parts of our planet, resulting from millions of years of geological transformations.
Practical Activity
Activity Title: Model of Terrestrial Reliefs
Project Objective
Each group of students will have to build a relief model, representing the three main types of formations: plain, plateau, and mountain. In addition, they must indicate in a report which geological processes are involved in the formation of these reliefs and what impacts these processes have on the way of life of local populations.
Detailed Project Description
The work will have to be developed in groups of 3 to 5 students and will have a total estimated execution time of two to four hours per student. It will require activity planning, model development, and report writing.
Required Materials
- Cardboard or wood for the base of the model.
- Clay, paper mache, or similar material to shape the relief.
- Water-based paint in various colors.
- Brushes.
- Decoration material (optional).
- Books, articles, and other resources to support the report.
Detailed Step-by-Step
- Start the project with research on the different types of relief (plain, plateaus, and mountains). You can begin with the resources indicated in the introduction.
- Plan how tasks will be divided among group members and set deadlines for each activity.
- Build the model base with cardboard or wood. It should be large enough to accommodate the three relief forms.
- Shape the clay or paper mache to form the plains, plateaus, and mountains. Remember to follow the theoretical description of each shape.
- Let it dry according to the instructions of the material used.
- Paint the model with colors that represent the reality of these formations. If desired, decorate the model to make it more realistic.
- Alongside the model construction, the report must be elaborated. It should include: Introduction (context, relevance, and objectives), Development (theory, activity explanation, methodology, and results), and Conclusion (review of main points, discussion of learnings, and project conclusions).
- Do not forget to include the bibliography used to support the report.
Project Deliverables
- Model representing the main types of relief and their characteristics.
- Report contextualizing and explaining the representation made, applying the studied theoretical concepts, and discussing the impact of these reliefs on the way of life of local populations. This report serves as a complement to the model, explaining the decisions made during construction and deepening the theoretical understanding of the topic.
The report should be written in a clear, objective, and well-structured manner, highlighting the learnings obtained during the project. It is important that the report does not only describe the practical activity but also discusses the theoretical concepts, the relevance of the topic, and the implications of terrestrial relief for human life.
