Contextualization

Climate is the average of the atmospheric conditions of a place over many years. It is influenced by a set of factors, called climatic factors, which include latitude, altitude, ocean currents, winds, topography, vegetation, among others.

In this sense, we can say that climatic factors are physical-geographical phenomena that directly influence the climate of a region. Understanding each of these factors in detail is essential for the understanding of climate and environmental dynamics on our planet and, consequently, the impacts that humanity can cause or suffer.

In our project 'Climatic Factors 2', we will delve into the climatic factors and their influence on the climatic variations of different regions. We will explore how latitude and altitude influence temperature, how winds and ocean currents can alter climatic conditions, and how topography and vegetation contribute to the existing climatic differences among the various regions of the planet.

Studying climatic factors allows us to have a more comprehensive view on environmental issues and helps us understand important phenomena that occur on our planet, such as climate change. Furthermore, it helps us understand the diversity of climates in our country and the importance of urban, agricultural, and industrial planning taking into account the climatic characteristics of each region.

Activity Title: 'Modeling the Climate'

Project Objective

To understand, in a practical and collaborative way, how climatic factors influence the climate of different regions of the world.

Detailed Project Description

Students, divided into groups of 3 to 5, should choose a geographical region of the world and, considering the climatic factors, create a three-dimensional model that represents the climatic characteristics of the chosen region.

Required Materials

  • Research material (books, internet, documentaries, etc.)
  • Materials for building the model (cardboard, clay, paint, sticks, fabrics, cotton, etc.)
  • Camera or cellphone to record the process and the final result of the project.

Detailed Step-by-Step for the Activity

  1. Research: Each group should choose a geographical region of the world and research the climatic factors that influence the climate of that region. Students should seek information about the latitude, altitude, ocean currents, winds, topography, and vegetation of the chosen region.

  2. Planning: With the collected information, the group should plan the construction of their three-dimensional model. The model must visually represent the climatic factors of the region and how they influence the local climate.

  3. Construction: Next, the group should build their three-dimensional model using the chosen materials.

  4. Recording: Throughout the process, the group must record, in photos or videos, the research, planning, and construction stages of the model.

  5. Presentation and Discussion: After building the model, the group should present the work to the class, explaining the climatic factors of the chosen region and how they are represented in the model. Other groups will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss the presented aspects.

Project Deliverables

The groups must deliver:

  1. The Three-Dimensional Model: The quality of the visual representation of the climatic factors and creativity in the use of materials will be evaluated.

  2. Written Report: The report should contain:

    • Introduction: It should contextualize the chosen region, explain its climatic relevance and the project's objective.
    • Development: It should detail the theory about the climatic factors relevant to the chosen region, explain the process of building the model, the methodology used, present the recorded photos or videos, and discuss the results.
    • Conclusion: It should summarize the main points presented in the work, reflect on the learnings obtained, and draw conclusions about the climatic factors of the chosen region.
    • Bibliography: It should list the sources of information used for the project.

The report should be written clearly, coherently, cohesively, and should be guided by the climatic factors found in the region, explaining how each of them contributes to the region's climate and how they were represented in the three-dimensional model.

This practical activity is important for students to truly understand how climatic factors influence the climate of regions, as well as to develop various skills, such as research, teamwork, building three-dimensional models, and report writing.
