Earth: Formation of the Continents: Review

Contextualization

The Formation of Continents is a phenomenon that occurred over billions of years and continues to change our Earth to this day. The theory of Continental Drift, proposed by Alfred Wegener in the early 20th century, and later improved by the Theory of Plate Tectonics, are key to understanding the morphology of Planet Earth. These theories help us understand the movement of tectonic plates, which results in the formation of mountains, earthquakes, volcanoes, and, of course, in the formation of continents as we know them.

Delving into the studies of Geology and Physical Geography is capable of providing a clear view of the physical characteristics of planet Earth. Being a geologically active planet, the processes that occurred in the past persist today and will likely continue in the future, impacting our lives in diverse ways.

Having an understanding of the structure and formation of Earth is of vital importance for us to understand our world. It directly influences the formation of soils, climate, available mineral resources, biodiversity, and the forms of life that have evolved on the planet. Furthermore, understanding the process of continent formation allows us to have a broader perspective on the history of humanity and climate change.

Our life on the planet is influenced by these geological processes. They are responsible for the creation and distribution of valuable resources such as oil and minerals, as well as natural threats like earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions. In other words, the processes that formed our continents directly influence how we live and interact with the environment around us.

Practical Activity: Recreating Continental Drift

Objective

The objective of this activity is to provide students with a practical and concrete understanding of Continental Drift and Plate Tectonics, which are fundamental to the formation of continents. Students will have the opportunity to recreate continental drift and observe in a playful way how tectonic plates move and interact.

Project Description

The groups, consisting of 3 to 5 students, will create a three-dimensional model representing the movement of tectonic plates and the formation of continents. The activity will be divided into two parts: research and model construction. The first part involves research on Continental Drift and Plate Tectonics, and the second part is the construction of the model and the project presentation.

Required Materials

  • Styrofoam sheets of different sizes
  • Acrylic paints in various colors
  • Paintbrushes
  • Ruler
  • Colored pencils or markers for marking
  • Glue
  • Toothpicks for fixing
  • Scissors

Step by Step

  1. Each group should conduct comprehensive research on Continental Drift and Plate Tectonics, using the resources listed in the introduction section and others they find useful.

  2. After the research, the groups should discuss and develop a plan on how they will represent the movement of tectonic plates and the formation of continents in their 3D model.

  3. Using the styrofoam sheets, the groups will cut different shapes to represent the main tectonic plates.

  4. The styrofoam sheets should be painted to represent the continents and oceans, according to the current world map.

  5. Using toothpicks, the groups will fix the styrofoam sheets to represent the movement of tectonic plates.

  6. Finally, each group should present their model, explaining what each piece represents and how it relates to Continental Drift and Plate Tectonics.

Project Deliverables

At the end of this project, each group must deliver the following:

  • The 3D model: Each group must present their three-dimensional model, explaining the representation of continents and the movement of tectonic plates.

  • Written Report: Each group must write a detailed report. The report should include: Introduction (contextualization of the theme and project objective); Development (the theory of Continental Drift and Plate Tectonics, detailed description of the practical activity, methodology used, results obtained, and discussions on the theme); Conclusion (summary of the main points of the project, lessons learned, and conclusions drawn about the project), and Bibliography used.

The written report should be clear, concise, and well-structured, demonstrating not only what was done in practice, but also the theoretical understanding of the theme. The report is the part of the project where students demonstrate their understanding of the theme, their synthesis skills, and their writing ability.
