Context
The Industrial Revolution was a period of intense technological innovation, socioeconomic, and environmental changes that began in England during the 18th century, triggering a transition from manual to mechanized labor. This era is subdivided into two phases. The first phase, known as the 1st Industrial Revolution, took place between 1760 and 1840, where there was innovation in the production system as a whole, introducing, for example, large-scale production and the steam engine.
The 2nd Industrial Revolution, which began in the mid-19th century and extended into the early 20th century, consisted of an even greater technological leap, where the implementation of electricity, chemistry, and oil as new energy sources took place. In addition, important inventions such as the telephone, telegraph, and incandescent light bulb occurred. It was also during this period that the assembly line emerged, a symbol of Fordism, which rationalized work and increased productivity.
Importance
Studying these periods is crucial to understand the economic and social development of contemporary society. The Industrial Revolutions profoundly shaped the world we live in, defining how the goods we consume are produced, labor relations, urbanization, and environmental impacts.
The changes that occurred during these periods directly impacted the geographical distribution of production and wealth, labor and living conditions of workers, urban infrastructures, population growth, and environmental degradation. Each of these effects shaped geography and society in different ways, creating the living, working, and consumption patterns we know today.
Practical Activity
Activity Title: Simulation of the Industrial Revolutions with Board Game
Project Objective:
To understand the historical events and the structural and socioeconomic changes resulting from the 1st and 2nd Industrial Revolutions, through the creation and execution of a board game, in which each team creates and manages their country during this period.
Detailed Project Description:
Each group will be responsible for creating a fictional country that will go through the stages of the 1st and 2nd Industrial Revolutions. Students will have to make strategic decisions according to the events that will be drawn throughout the simulation. They will have to deal with challenges similar to those faced by different countries during these periods and see how their decisions will affect the progress of their fictional country.
Required Materials:
- Cardboard or cardboard to create the board.
- Paper and pens to create event cards.
- Game pieces (can be made of paper, plastic, wood, porcelain, etc.)
- Dice to decide the outcome of events and actions.
Step by Step:
- Each group must create a board, which will represent their fictional country, marking locations for industry, agriculture, population, and natural resources.
- Create event cards related to the Industrial Revolution, such as technological innovations, economic crises, population growth, labor movements, political changes, among others.
- Each round, groups draw an event card and make a strategic decision to deal with the situation presented. For example, if the event is a technological innovation, they may decide to invest in its implementation in the industry, which will increase production but may result in unemployment.
- The consequences of the decisions must be recorded on the board. For example, an increase in industrial production may result in the need for more natural resources, which must be marked on the board.
- Continue the game until all events have been played. In the end, groups should reflect on the decisions they made and how they shaped the evolution of their fictional country.
Project Deliverables:
-
A written report that should contain:
- Introduction: Describing the purpose of the game and how it relates to the study of the 1st and 2nd Industrial Revolutions.
- Development: Explain the game and its rules in detail. Present and discuss the progress and decisions of your fictional country during the game. Justify the decisions made based on the theoretical concepts learned and the consequences of these decisions.
- Conclusion: Summarize the main events. Discuss what was learned about the Industrial Revolutions through the game simulation. Reflect on the decisions made and how they shaped the evolution of your fictional country.
- Bibliography: List the reference materials used for the report and for the development of the game.
-
The created board game: Include photographs of the board in the report.
Remember: The goal of the game is to create a deeper understanding of the Industrial Revolutions and the changes they brought. Although competition may be part of the game, the focus should be on collaboration and joint learning.
