Geography is an area of knowledge that is dedicated to understanding the organization of space, the interactions between society and the environment, natural phenomena, and the socio-economic characteristics of the territory. It encompasses various subareas, such as Human Geography, which studies forms of social organization and their projections in space, and Physical Geography, which includes natural processes.

Studying Geography provides us with the tools to understand the possession, use, and appropriation of space, whether natural or built, as well as to provide the necessary tools for reading, interpreting, and producing maps. For example, the process of globalization is a phenomenon of great relevance to the field of Geography, as it directly interfered with the organization of global space.

Fundamentals of Geography 2 is a topic of great importance for 3rd-year high school students, as it allows them to understand how the organization of space occurs in different ways in different places and how the physical and human characteristics of a locality can influence its dynamics. In addition, the study of Geography deepens understanding of topics such as social inequality, the environment, urban and rural development, among others.

The relevance of understanding the fundamentals of Geography is unquestionable. From the challenges we face in everyday life, such as environmental issues, urbanization, and social inequalities, to the governmental decisions made nationally and internationally, Geography plays a crucial role. Furthermore, this discipline contributes to the development of critical thinking by enabling an understanding of how spaces are constructed and modified over time, which is essential for a broad and contextualized understanding of the reality in which we live.

Title: "The Construction of Geographies: Investigating Territories and Identities"

Project Objective

This project aims to engage students in the exploration, understanding, and interpretation of different geographical and cultural aspects of a specific space (be it a city, a state, or even a country), focusing on exploring themes such as cultural identity, territories, borders, and the social relations established in these places.

Detailed Project Description

Groups must choose a place on the planet for study, being encouraged to opt for places that are less known or that have particular geographical, literary, cultural, historical, or social characteristics. The work will be carried out in groups of 3 to 5 students and will last approximately one month.

Research for the project should be deeply interdisciplinary, involving aspects of Geography, History, Sociology, among others. Students should research aspects that include, but are not limited to, Physical Geography (such as climate, vegetation, relief), social organization, local customs and traditions, economic aspects, environmental challenges, literary and cultural representations of the place, among other relevant aspects.

The project encourages the acquisition of technical skills such as research, data analysis, information organization, teamwork, and academic writing, as well as socio-emotional skills such as responsibility, empathy, respect for diversity, among others.

Step-by-Step for Carrying Out the Activity

1. Group Formation: Students will form groups of 3 to 5 people.

2. Choosing the Place: Groups will choose a place for study.

3. Task Division: Each group will divide the research topics among its members.

4. Research: Students will conduct extensive research on their respective topics.

5. Review and Compilation of Data: Groups will meet to review and compile all collected data.

6. Report Preparation: Groups will prepare a detailed report of their findings.

7. Presentation Preparation: Students will prepare a presentation of the results of their research.

8. Presentation: Groups will make a presentation to the class, where they will share the results of their research.

Project Deliverables

Groups will produce the following deliverables:

1. Written Report - The report must be formatted according to ABNT standards and will consist of: Introduction (contextualization of the chosen place, justification for the choice, and relevance of the study), Development (detailed description of the theoretical concepts worked on, activities carried out, data collected, and analysis of the same), and Conclusions (conclusions drawn from the work, lessons learned, and possible suggestions for future work). In the bibliography, students should indicate all sources used in the preparation of the work.

2. Presentation: A presentation (can be in PowerPoint, video, poster, etc.) highlighting the main points of their research and conclusions. The idea is for them to creatively and playfully share what they learned during the research.

3. Logbook: A record of all stages of the work, from group formation, through the choice of place to the final presentation. This document should contain the perceptions, challenges, and learnings that the group had during the process. The "logbook" should be thought of as a learning record that can be revisited at other times and serve as an example for future projects.

The completed project will serve as a great opportunity for learning and growth in terms of understanding complex aspects of geography and human interaction with space, as well as for improving research, analysis, and presentation skills.
