Nuclear Energy: Review

Context

Nuclear energy, always a relevant and complex topic, is the energy source created from nuclear reactions. Its most well-known use is in electricity generation, but it is also used in various other areas such as industry, medicine, and agriculture.

The principle of nuclear energy operation is based on the breaking of heavy atoms, generating heat that is later converted into electrical energy. All this process takes place within a nuclear power plant.

Importance of Nuclear Energy

Nuclear energy has great global importance, as it is an energy source that does not emit greenhouse gases and has a high production capacity. However, the discussion about nuclear energy is complex and multifaceted, as it involves considerations about safety, social and environmental impacts, economy, and geopolitics.

It is important to assess the risks and benefits of using nuclear energy, taking into account the diversity of conditions and needs of different countries and contexts. The debate on nuclear energy is therefore an important subject in the education of young people, who are the future decision-makers of our societies.

Practical Activity: 'The Impact of Nuclear Energy in the World'

Project Objective

The objective of this activity is to analyze the role of nuclear energy in the global socio-economic and environmental configuration. Students should research the presence of nuclear power plants in different countries, their socio-environmental impacts, and the associated public policies.

Detailed Project Description

Each group will be responsible for researching and analyzing the situation of nuclear energy in a specific country. The groups should choose a country that has nuclear power plants and conduct a detailed research on the subject, considering economic, social, and environmental aspects, as well as the challenges and debates surrounding the use of nuclear energy.

Required Materials

  • Internet access for research.
  • Material for writing the report: can be digital (text editor) or physical (notebook, note cards).
  • Tools for creating graphs and maps, if necessary.

Detailed Step-by-Step for Carrying Out the Activity

  1. Group Formation: Students should divide into groups of 3 to 5 people.

  2. Country Selection: Each group must select a country that uses nuclear energy for research.

  3. Research: Students should search for information about the use of nuclear energy in the chosen country. The research should include: number of nuclear power plants, percentage of energy generated by nuclear energy, economic, social, and environmental impacts, related public policies, among others.

  4. Preparation of Maps and Graphs: Groups should prepare maps showing the distribution of nuclear power plants throughout the country and graphs illustrating the evolution of nuclear energy production over the years.

  5. Writing the Report: Students should prepare a report following the guidelines below.

Project Deliverables and Written Report

At the end of the project, each group must deliver:

  1. The written report, which must contain:

    • Introduction: Contextualization of the theme, explaining the importance of nuclear energy in the world and in the chosen country. This topic should also present the project's objective.

    • Development: This section should describe the panorama of nuclear energy in the chosen country, including economic data, social and environmental impacts, associated public policies, and any other relevant information collected. The methodology used in data collection should be indicated, and finally, the results obtained should be presented and discussed.

    • Conclusions: Students should conclude the work by summarizing their main points, explaining the lessons learned, and the conclusions drawn about nuclear energy in the chosen country.

    • Bibliography: References of all sources used in the research.

  2. Maps and graphs: Map(s) showing the distribution of nuclear power plants throughout the country and graph(s) illustrating the evolution of nuclear energy use in the country over the years.

It is important to note that both the report and the maps and graphs should be detailed, demonstrating the group's understanding of the nuclear energy theme in the context of the chosen country.
