Contextualization
Hydrography, as an integral part of geographical science, has an undeniable importance in understanding our lives and the life of the planet. Studying it is not just an academic exercise, but an effort to understand how water, this precious and scarce resource, is distributed and used around the world. Furthermore, studying hydrography is realizing how the distribution of freshwater impacts the socioeconomic development of nations and can serve as a marker of global inequality.
We locate rivers, seas, lakes, and other bodies of water on the map and understand their role in the flow of natural systems. Similarly, studying their dimensions, characteristics, and the processes that occur in these environments gives us a broader perspective on how such systems work. That is why hydrography is a discipline of unquestionable importance when it comes to the global understanding of our planet.
Some of the key concepts of hydrography that will be addressed in this project include: the watershed, the water cycles, the main rivers and their functions, human impact on hydrography, among others. These are essential concepts that will help contextualize the importance of hydrography in the world.
To further enrich the research during the project execution, we recommend the use of the following resources:
- National Water Agency: Brazilian government agency that contains data and information about Brazilian and global hydrography.
- Project WET Foundation: International water education organization with many resources to understand hydrography.
- Visual Geography: For the study of oceans, seas, lakes, rivers, and glaciers forming a visual panorama of water on Earth.
- OpenStreetMap: Interactive and collaborative map that can be used to locate different bodies of water in the world.

Project Objective
This project aims to encourage research, understanding, and synthesis of information about global hydrography. This work emphasizes the importance of watersheds, the distribution and use of water, as well as human impacts on these areas and water resources. The goal is to develop a critical and reflective perspective on the human interaction and dependence on water resources.
Detailed Project Description:
Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members and should choose one of the main watersheds in the world to deepen their studies. They will be tasked with investigating and documenting the trajectory of the main river, from its source to its mouth, exploring its physical, socioeconomic, and environmental aspects.
The aspects to be researched include, but are not limited to:
- Geographic location
- Physical characteristics (such as length, water volume, climate, animals, and vegetation)
- Human uses (such as agriculture, industry, energy, tourism, transportation)
- Human impacts (such as pollution, overexploitation, damming)
- Cultural and historical importance
- Current and future challenges (such as climate change, conflicting uses, management policy)
Required Materials:
Students will need the following materials:
- Internet access for research
- Physical and political maps of the watershed territory
- Paper, pens, markers for documents, notes, summaries, drafts
- Presentation software (PowerPoint, Google Slides, Prezi, etc)
- Video editing software (optional)
Step by Step:
Step 1: Group Formation and Watershed Selection Students will form groups and choose one of the main watersheds in the world.
Step 2: Research Students will conduct online and offline research on the chosen watershed. They will need time to gather and understand the information, so this step should receive at least half of the total project time.
Step 3: Synthesis and Creation Students will synthesize the information in an easy-to-understand format. They will prepare a presentation that involves text, images, maps, and, if possible, short videos.
Step 4: Review The groups will review and enhance their presentations. This involves checking comprehension, information flow, and presentation style.
Step 5: Presentation Each group will make an oral presentation to the class.
Step 6: Written Document Finally, students will write a document with the structure and content as mentioned earlier.
The written document is a critical part of the project. When writing the report, students should follow the following structure:

Introduction: Should include the context, the relevance of the topic, the chosen watershed, and the study objective. The introduction should be brief but engaging.

Development: Should tell the story of the watershed, with clear sections for each researched aspect. The theory behind the discussed concepts, the methodology used, the presentation, and analysis of the results should also be included here. This is the largest part of the report and should be detailed and well-written.

Conclusion: Here, students should recap the main points, summarize what they have learned, and reflect on the human impact on the hydrographic system and what it means for the future.
