Italian and German Unification: Review

Introduction

The 19th century was marked by a series of events that directly impacted the political structure of Europe, among them, the Italian and German Unification. This process, which resulted in the formation of two of the most influential countries in the modern world, is a tremendous example of the combination of nationalist ideals, struggles for independence, and strategic political games.

The Italian Unification (Risorgimento) was a set of political and social events that took place between 1815 and 1871, resulting in the formation of the modern Italian State. The German Unification took place between 1864 and 1871 and was a political and social process that culminated in the formation of the German Empire.

The study of these processes is essential for understanding the emergence of many nation-states as we know them today, and their impacts on current geopolitics.

Contextualization

The Italian and German Unifications were processes full of nuances, involving a mixture of romantic ideals of national sovereignty, struggles for independence, military conflicts, and diplomatic maneuvers. Both unifications were driven by internal forces, aiming to consolidate small kingdoms, duchies, and city-states into one nation, but they were also influenced by external forces, such as the pressures from the great European powers.

These unification processes have significant importance in today's world. The creation of modern nations in Italy and Germany profoundly altered the political landscape of Europe and led to the emergence of nations that would become powerful global influencers. Moreover, they also led to the First and Second World Wars, events that strongly shaped the contemporary world.

Practical Activity: Board Game of Italian and German Unification

Project Objective:

The objective of this project is to have students research and learn about each stage of the Italian and German unification processes, representing them in a board game. Students should work in groups of 3 to 5 people.

Detailed Project Description:

Each group will be responsible for creating a board game that represents the Italian and German unification processes. The board game should reflect the historical journey that took place over time.

Groups should, through research, divide the unification process into distinct stages, which will be represented by squares or sections on the board game. Each square should contain a question about that relevant stage that players must answer correctly to advance.

Required Materials:

  1. Cardboard or cardboard for the board.
  2. Colored markers.
  3. Game pieces - can be stones, coins, bottle caps, etc.
  4. Small cards to write the questions and answers.

Step by Step:

  1. Research: Start the project by researching the historical process of Italian and German Unification.
  2. Division of the Process into Stages: Divide the unification process into distinct stages or key events. Each of these events will be a square on the board game.
  3. Board Creation: Draw a path on the cardboard with the number of squares representing the stages of unification. Write a brief summary of each stage in its corresponding square on the board.
  4. Questions and Answers: For each square, create a question about the event that occurred in that stage of the unification process. Write the question and answer on a card.
  5. Game Rules: Write the rules of the game, explaining the objective (which must be linked to the understanding of the unification process) and how players move around the board.
  6. Test the Game: After creating, groups should test the game by playing at least once to check if everything works correctly.

Project Deliverables and Written Document:

Students must deliver the board game, the set of questions and answers, and a written report.

The written report should have the following structure:

  1. Introduction: Here, students should contextualize the Italian and German unification, the concept of nationalism and sovereignty, and the importance of unification for the formation of the modern world.

  2. Development: Students should describe the methodology used to create the game, including the research conducted, the resources used, how the unification process was divided into stages, how they were represented in the game, and the questions created. This is also the space to discuss the results of the test game, highlighting strengths and limitations of the game.

  3. Conclusion: Students should discuss the lessons learned from the project, the skills acquired, and their understanding of the Italian and German unification process.

  4. Bibliography: Students should conclude the report with a list of sources consulted during the research.

This project will require technical skills in historical and conceptual research, as well as socio-emotional skills in teamwork, time management, problem-solving, and creativity.
