Classical Greece and the Hellenistic period are two of the most fascinating chapters in history, marking the peak and decline of ancient Greek civilization. The Classical Period, spanning the 5th and 4th centuries BC, was the golden age of Greek city-states, where democracy, philosophy, and art flourished. It was during this time that we saw iconic figures like Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle shaping human thought, and cities like Athens becoming the cultural center of the ancient world.
On the other hand, Hellenism, from the late 4th to the 1st century BC, is the period following Alexander the Great's conquest of Persia. It marks the fusion of Greek culture with Middle Eastern cultures, resulting in an unprecedented cultural diffusion. Its influence is still felt today in areas such as literature, architecture, and philosophy.
Studying these periods provides us with valuable insight into the development of Western society. Classical Greece and Hellenism, with their invaluable contributions to art, politics, education, and philosophy, shaped subsequent societies in unprecedented ways.
At the request of the philosopher and historian Will Durant, it is essential to study history to 'know what life is.' Understanding Classical Greece and Hellenism can help us understand how we got here as a civilization, and more importantly, where we might be heading.
Practical Activity: Journey to the Past - Classical Greece and Hellenism.
Project Objective:
The activity aims to provide students with an in-depth knowledge of the Classical Period and Hellenism in Ancient Greece and develop research, cooperation, communication, and creativity skills. At the end of the project, students will have created a slideshow presentation recounting a 'journey through time' and a detailed report on the work done.
Project Description:
The project will be carried out by groups of 3 to 5 students who will create a slideshow presentation that takes a journey through time in Classical Greece and the Hellenistic period. The presentation should be divided into three parts: 1) Daily Life, 2) Influential Figures, and 3) Legacy for Western Civilization. To complement the slideshow presentation, a detailed report on the work done will be required.
Required Materials:
- Computer with internet access and research programs.
- Slideshow creation program (Microsoft PowerPoint, Google Slides, etc.).
- Research materials (books, articles, etc.).
- Notepad or digital text processing program to write the report.
Step by Step:
- Each group should divide into subgroups, and each subgroup is responsible for a section of the presentation and report.
- Start researching daily life in Classical Greece and the Hellenistic period. What were the cities like? What were the houses like? What were the customs? What were the religious practices? etc.
- Next, research the influential figures of the period. What were their accomplishments? Why are they remembered? What were their contributions to history?
- Finally, research the legacy of Classical Greece and the Hellenistic period for Western civilization.
- Create a slideshow presentation with the information obtained from the research.
- Review the work done and prepare for the presentation.
- Write a detailed report on the project. The report should include: Introduction (contextualization of the theme and project objective), Development (detailed explanation of the activities carried out, methodology, and results), Conclusion (summary of the main points and lessons learned), and Bibliography.
Project Deliverables:
- A slideshow presentation with details on daily life, influential figures, and the legacy of Classical Greece and the Hellenistic period.
- A detailed report on the work done. Including Introduction, Development, Conclusion, and Bibliography.
- The slideshow presentation should be complemented by the report. The report should detail the project implementation process, including the challenges encountered, how they were overcome, and the lessons learned from the project implementation.
