Africa is often perceived only in terms of slavery or told from the perspective of European arrival. However, the history of the African continent is rich, vast, and begins long before European intervention. With a vast territory and immense variety of cultures, it is essential to learn about the grand civilizations that arose on this continent. The civilizations of Kush, Axum, and Ghana were some of the earliest African kingdoms, with rich cultures and advanced societies that influenced world history.

The Kingdom of Kush, also known as Nubia, extended along the Nile in present-day Sudan and southern Egypt. It established itself as a regional power, noted for its rich cultural tradition, monumental architecture, and a series of warrior queens known as 'Kandakes'. Axum, on the other hand, was located in what is now Ethiopia and Eritrea, considered one of the four greatest kingdoms of the time, alongside Rome, Persia, and China, known for its unique architecture of giant obelisks. The Kingdom of Ghana, situated in the Sahel region of West Africa, was a flourishing commercial center, known for its abundance of gold.

Introduction to the Project

You and your colleagues will embark on a journey of research and exploration of these three great ancient African civilizations: Kush, Axum, and Ghana. Throughout this project, you will deepen your understanding of these civilizations, analyze their importance and impact on African and world history, as well as critically examine existing narratives. Additionally, you will be challenged to explore the concepts of territory, borders, and void (spatial, temporal, and cultural) in different societies, and how these ideas were shaped and influenced by the civilizations of Kush, Axum, and Ghana.

Activity Title: 'Kush, Axum and Ghana: Traveling Through Time'

Project Objective:

This project aims to explore the ancient civilizations of Africa, specifically Kush, Axum, and Ghana. With the purpose of developing research skills, critical analysis, teamwork, and communication, as well as enhancing your understanding of ancient African history.

Detailed Project Description:

This project will be carried out by groups of 3 to 5 students and will last approximately one month. Each group should research in-depth about the three civilizations, prepare a creative presentation, and, in the end, submit a detailed written report on the explored civilizations.

Required Materials:

1. Internet access for online research.
2. Books and reference materials on African history.
3. Notebooks or paper for notes.
4. Computer or tablet for presentation preparation and report writing.

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution:

Step 1: Research and Initial Discussion (10-12 hours)

1. Divide the work among group members, each focusing on an aspect of the civilizations: culture, politics, economy, art, architecture, etc.
2. Conduct independent research on your topic using the suggested resources and any other reliable materials.
3. Organize a group meeting to share and discuss your findings.

Step 2: Presentation Preparation (15-20 hours)

1. Based on the discussion and research conducted, plan a creative presentation that brings to life the civilizations of Kush, Axum, and Ghana. The presentation can be a video, a play, a simulation, a model, etc.
2. Divide the work and start preparing the planned presentation.

Step 3: Report Writing (10-15 hours)

1. Begin preparing the written report on the explored civilizations, in which you will analyze in detail their cultural, political, economic aspects, etc.
