Introduction

The Second Industrial Revolution, also known as the Industrial Revolution 2, was a period of intense technological and structural transformations in industry that occurred between the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The invention and use of new sources of energy, such as electricity and fossil fuels, as well as new machines and production methods, such as the assembly line, played a crucial role in this historical period.

These changes affected not only the industry but the entire socioeconomic structure of the time. The increased efficiency in the production of consumer goods caused prices to fall, making them more accessible to a larger portion of the population. Urbanization accelerated, with a large concentration of people in cities seeking work in factories.

The Second Industrial Revolution also gave rise to new forms of work organization, structuring the wage labor model, which continues to this day, and the emergence of labor movements that fought for better working conditions. It was a period of intense exploitation of workers, with grueling hours and precarious conditions.

Contextualization

Studying the Second Industrial Revolution is fundamental to understanding the configuration of the contemporary world. Many of the production and consumption patterns we have today, as well as labor relations, have their roots in this historical period. Furthermore, the Second Industrial Revolution marked the beginning of a phase of great scientific and technological advances, which boosted the development of many of the technologies we use today.

The analysis of this period also allows us to think about the socio-environmental impacts of the industrial production model, which has been causing a series of ecological imbalances ever since. In this sense, thinking about the Second Industrial Revolution means also thinking about urgent issues of the 21st century, such as the climate crisis, social inequalities, and labor challenges.

Project Goal:

The goal of this project is for students to deepen their study of the Second Industrial Revolution through research and the creation of a model representing a factory from that era.

Detailed Project Description:

Students, divided into groups of 3 to 5 members, should research factories from the Second Industrial Revolution period, identifying the main physical and organizational aspects of these factories and representing them through a three-dimensional model.

The project should address the following aspects of the Second Industrial Revolution:

1. The new technologies introduced, such as steam engines, electricity, and assembly lines;
2. The functioning of the factories, including layout, division of labor, and working conditions;
3. The relationship between the factory and the surrounding urban environment, including workers' housing, environmental impacts, and transformations in the urban landscape.

Required Materials:

1. Research material (books, articles, documentaries, etc.);
2. Materials for building the model, such as cardboard, colored paper, glue, scissors, paint, and brush;
