Napoleonic Period: Review

Contextualization

Napoleon's expansion marked a crucial period in European history, characterized by significant political, social, and cultural changes. From the moment Napoleon Bonaparte took power in France, after the chaos of the French Revolution, a new order was established on the continent.

Napoleon, a charismatic and ambitious leader, introduced a new civil legal code known as the Napoleonic Code, which represented a break from the Old Regime. Furthermore, the French leader sought to expand the empire throughout Europe, leading to various conflicts and wars known as the Napoleonic Wars, involving several nations.

Theoretical Introduction

In this sense, to understand the magnitude of the Napoleonic Period, it is crucial to comprehend three main topics: Napoleon's rise to power, the Napoleonic Code, and the Napoleonic Wars.

The first part is to understand how Napoleon, a simple French army officer, managed to rise to the highest power in France. He took advantage of the post-revolution chaos and popular discontent to establish a new regime that, despite being authoritarian, managed to bring some stability to the country.

Secondly, the Napoleonic Code was a legal milestone not only for France but for the entire continent. It introduced fundamental principles such as equality before the law and personal freedom, which formed the basis of civil law in many countries.

Finally, the Napoleonic Wars were a series of conflicts that involved practically all of Europe. They demonstrate Napoleon's imperial ambitions and his attempt to establish French hegemony on the continent.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Napoleon and the Genesis of Modern Europe"

Project Objective:

Investigate and understand how Napoleon Bonaparte's rise to power, the establishment of the Napoleonic Code, and the Napoleonic Wars shaped modern Europe.

Detailed Project Description:

Students, divided into groups of 3 to 5 members, will conduct in-depth research on the three main proposed topics (Napoleon's rise, the Napoleonic Code, and the Napoleonic Wars) and prepare a Seminar-style presentation accompanied by a written report.

Required Materials:

Research materials: Recommended books, documentaries, and online resources.

Activity Steps:

  1. Research: Each group should divide tasks, with each member focusing on one or more subtopics within the three main topics mentioned. Research should be conducted using the suggested materials and other reliable sources.

  2. Presentation Preparation: The group should gather to discuss their findings and prepare a presentation. The presentation should include an introduction, a development section (presenting the three topics), and a conclusion.

  3. Report Writing: The group, collectively, should write the project report. The report should include an introduction (providing context on the theme and project objectives), development (explaining the theory and activity in detail, presenting and discussing the results), conclusions (summarizing the main points and expressing the learnings and conclusions about the project), and a bibliography (listing the sources used). The report writing should be collaborative, with all members participating.

  4. Seminar Presentation: Each group will present their work to the class. Each member should actively participate in the presentation.

  5. Project Submission: Finally, the group will submit the written report, reflecting the content of the presentation.

Project Submission:

At the end of this project, each group must submit:

  1. An oral presentation to the class on the proposed topics.

  2. A written report that reflects the presentation content. This report should follow the four proposed topics: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography.

Additionally, the report should be written in a way that connects and complements the oral presentation. For example, if the presentation included the use of images or graphics, these should be described and interpreted in the report. Important: The report should be collaboratively developed, with all group members actively participating in this process.
