Contextualization

The Second Industrial Revolution, also known as the Second Industrial Revolution, was a period of intense economic and social transformations that took place in the second half of the 19th century until the beginning of the 20th century. Marked by the introduction of new technologies, such as steel, electricity, and petroleum-derived fuels, this period also witnessed the development of financial capitalism and the mass consumer goods industry.

The Second Industrial Revolution did not happen in a vacuum. Its roots can be traced back to the First Industrial Revolution, which took place between 1760 and 1840. During this period, England and other European nations experienced radical changes in agriculture, manufacturing, mining, textile production, and transportation, which had a profound effect on the socio-economic and cultural conditions of the time.

The Second Industrial Revolution was driven by scientific discoveries and technological innovations, resulting in rapid changes in many aspects of human work, from production to consumption. This affected the way we live and work, shaping our world in ways that are still felt today.

The Industrial Revolution 2 is of enormous importance for understanding the modern world, as it is the starting point for understanding our industrial and technological societies. The emergence of large companies, the rapid growth of cities, and the mass migrations of rural populations to urban areas are all phenomena that arose during the Second Industrial Revolution.

Studying the Second Industrial Revolution, therefore, is delving into the roots of the economic, social, and political conditions that shape the contemporary world. This helps us better understand how we arrived at the present, as well as develop a more informed perspective on the future.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Rebuilding the Second Industrial Revolution"

Project Objective

This activity aims to provide students with the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the Second Industrial Revolution, its impacts on society and the economy, and the transformations it generated in the world. In addition, the project aims to develop research, interpretation, writing, teamwork, and presentation skills.

Project Description

Students will be organized into groups of 3 to 5 participants. Each group will be tasked with researching a specific aspect of the Second Industrial Revolution (for example, technological innovations, economic changes, social and cultural impacts) and preparing a seminar-style presentation, followed by a discussion with the class.

In addition, each group must build a "virtual museum" using presentation software, such as PowerPoint or Google Slides, including images, texts, and videos related to the chosen theme. The creation of the virtual museum should require at least 12 hours of work from each group member.

This activity will involve the History discipline, in investigating the historical contexts and events of the Second Industrial Revolution, and the Arts discipline, in the creation and design of the virtual museum.

Required Materials

• Presentation Software (PowerPoint, Google Slides, etc.)
• History books and other research sources

Step by Step

1. The class should be divided into small groups of 3 to 5 students, and each group will receive a specific theme of the Second Industrial Revolution to research.

2. Students should research intensively on the topic, using various sources of information (books, research websites, documentaries, academic articles, etc).

3. Based on the research, each group should prepare a presentation, which should include a brief introduction to the topic, analysis and detailed discussion of the most important aspects, and a conclusion on the influence and impact of the topic on contemporary society.

4. In parallel, groups should start building the virtual museum, selecting images, videos, and texts that illustrate and enhance the understanding of the chosen theme.

5. Each group will present their seminar and the virtual museum to the class, followed by an open discussion on the topic.

6. After the presentation, each group should write a document reporting the results. The document should include the following topics: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography used.

Project Delivery

At the end of the project, each group must deliver:

1. The seminar presentation, which will be evaluated based on the depth and accuracy of the content, clarity of the presentation, ability to answer questions and stimulate discussion, as well as the relevance and originality of the analysis and conclusions.

2. The virtual museum, which will be evaluated based on the quality of the research conducted, the organization and clarity of the information presented, and the relevance and quantity of the materials selected.

3. The written document, which should include an introduction contextualizing the theme, detailed development of the research conducted, conclusions on the impact and relevance of the Second Industrial Revolution, and the bibliography used during the research. The writing should be clear, coherent, well-founded, and the formatting should follow the ABNT standards.

In addition to the project delivery, it is expected that students have developed teamwork, research, communication, time management, proactivity, and the ability to analyze and evaluate complex historical concepts.
