Cold War: Peaceful Coexistence, Conflicts and Social Movements: Review

Contextualization

The Cold War, a period that lasted from 1945 to 1991, was a time of political and military tensions between the two global superpowers post-World War II: the United States (USA) and the Soviet Union (USSR). This period is marked by a strong ideological rivalry between capitalism, led by the USA, and socialism, spearheaded by the USSR.

One of the most emblematic moments of this period was the so-called 'Peaceful Coexistence', established between the two superpowers in the mid-1950s. This phase, far from meaning true peace, represented a temporary decrease in tensions, during which both blocs sought to convey an image of stability and prosperity to the rest of the world.

On the other hand, the Cold War was also the stage for various indirect military conflicts. One of the most notorious was the Vietnam War, a highly complex and devastating conflict that polarized the world and highlighted the extent of the ideological and military confrontation that characterized the Cold War.

Importance of the Theme

Understanding this period is essential to comprehend the contemporary world. Many of the current geopolitical configurations, as well as power relations and global economic dynamics, have their roots in this era. Moreover, the Cold War influenced a series of social movements, both in the USA and the USSR and in other countries around the world.

These movements, which encompassed issues such as civil rights, gender equality, anti-war protests, and others, were widely influenced by the climate of tension and political polarization of the Cold War. Studying these movements can help understand how populations mobilize and organize in response to political and social crises.

To delve deeper into the topic, I suggest reading the book 'From the Cold War to the New Order' by José Flávio Sombra Saraiva (Moderna Publishing, 1994) or visiting the website 'World History' (https://www.historiadomundo.com.br/guerra-fria), which contains several articles on the subject.

Practical Activity

Title: 'Recreating the Cold War: Simulation and Debate Game'

Project Objective

To understand the complex political, economic, and social processes that occurred during the Cold War through the creation and participation in a Simulation Game. The activity encourages teamwork, historical research, critical analysis, and debate skills.

Detailed Project Description

The project will be carried out by groups of 3 to 5 students, with the creation of a board game that simulates the main events and conflicts of the Cold War period. Each group will be responsible for a specific region of the world during the Cold War (for example, the United States, Soviet Union, Europe, Asia, Latin America).

Required Materials

  1. Cardboard or poster board for the base of the board game.
  2. Colored markers, colored pencils, pens, etc. for creating the game.
  3. Paper for creating game cards and tokens.
  4. Books, articles, documentaries, reliable websites, etc., for historical research.

Step-by-Step Guide for the Activity

  1. Divide the class into groups of 3 to 5 students.
  2. Each group will be responsible for extensively researching their assigned region during the Cold War, including key events, conflicts, political leaders, etc.
  3. After the research, the groups must create a board game that reflects the geopolitical dynamics of the Cold War period. The game should include elements that reflect the events and conflicts of the period, such as 'event cards' that can alter the balance of power, for example.
  4. Once the games are ready, the groups will exchange games and play them to understand how the Cold War period was interpreted and represented by their peers.
  5. Finally, each group must write a detailed report on the game, including the rules, the justification for the inclusion of certain events and figures, and how the game dynamics reflect the historical realities of the Cold War period.

The final project submission will be the board game and the detailed report, which should be structured as follows:

  1. Introduction: The group must contextualize the theme 'Cold War', its relevance and real-world application, as well as the objective of this project.
  2. Development: The group must explain in detail the creation of the game, including the rules, the methodology used for creating the game, and the historical research conducted. Finally, the group must present and discuss the results of the game test, reflecting on how the game helped deepen the group's understanding of the Cold War period.
  3. Conclusion: The group must conclude the work by summarizing its main points, indicating the learnings obtained, and the conclusions drawn from the project.
  4. Bibliography: The group must indicate the sources they relied on to work on the project, such as books, web pages, videos, etc.
