Middle Ages: Review

Contextualization

The Middle Ages, also known as the Medieval period, is a phase of history that lasted from the 5th to the 15th century and was marked by profound political, economic, cultural, and social transitions. This period was characterized by the fall of the Roman Empire, the creation of barbarian kingdoms, the establishment of feudalism, the growth of the Church, Arab invasions, and the growth of cities.

Understanding this period is essential to comprehend the political, economic, and cultural structures that shape the modern world. During the Middle Ages, feudalism gained strength, the Church established itself as a central institution, and important technological and scientific advances took place. Furthermore, society, arts, and philosophy underwent profound renewal.

Importance

This project aims to explore the Middle Ages from different perspectives, leading to a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of this period. Through this study, you, students, will be able to understand how medieval society was organized, how people lived, what were the beliefs and cultural practices, and how these aspects of the medieval world influenced the development of modern society.

The lessons learned from analyzing the Middle Ages have clear implications for the contemporary world, whether in understanding political institutions, in the view of themes such as power, justice, and freedom, or in our relationship with technology and science.

Practical Activity: Reviving the Middle Ages

Activity Title: "Recreation of a Medieval Village"

Project Objective

The main objective of this activity is to deepen the knowledge and understanding of the Middle Ages through a practical project that stimulates creativity, critical thinking, research, collaboration, and communication among groups. Each group will be responsible for recreating a medieval village with all its characteristics, including political, economic, social, cultural, and technological aspects.

Detailed Project Description

Each group will be responsible for designing and creating a model of a medieval village, representing various structures such as the castle, the church, the peasants' houses, the market, etc. Each structure must be accompanied by a written description explaining its importance and function in medieval society.

Students should also consider in their project how social relations were, the feudal system, the role of the Church, economic activities, and the daily life of different social classes. The model should be a physical representation of these aspects.

Required Materials

  • Cardboard, construction paper, papier-mâché, or any other material for building the model
  • Paints, markers, colored pencils
  • Glue, scissors, X-Acto knife
  • Books, websites, documentaries for research

Step by Step

  1. Research: Students should start by researching life in the Middle Ages, focusing on aspects such as social structure, physical structure of villages, the economy, the role of the Church, etc. The suggested resources in the introduction can be used as a starting point.

  3. Writing the Description: Each structure must be accompanied by a written description, explaining its importance and function in medieval society.

  4. Building the Model: Students can use the suggested materials to build the model of the medieval village.

  5. Presentation: Each group presents their village, explaining the importance and function of each structure, as well as discussing life in the Middle Ages based on their research.

Project Deliverables

  1. Model of the medieval village: The model must be a physical representation of the village, with all important structures present and precisely located.

  2. Descriptions of the Structures: Each structure must have a written description, explaining its importance and function in medieval society.

  3. Project Report: After completing the practical part of the project, students must write a document reporting their findings in the form of a report following the sections: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography used.

    • Introduction: In this section, students must contextualize the Middle Ages and the relevance of studying this period. They must also explain the project's objective.

    • Development: Here, students must discuss the theory about the Middle Ages they learned. They should explain the activity in detail, the methodology used, and the results obtained.

    • Conclusions: Students must revisit the main points, discuss what they learned, and the conclusions drawn from this project.
