Mathematics, in its vast array of topics and applications, often explores concepts that seem distant from our daily lives. However, the 'Distance between Points' is one of those topics that transcends the realm of mathematics, applying to various scenarios in our daily lives. This is a geometric measure that plays a crucial role in smaller dimensions, such as calculating the distance between two points on a map, as well as on a larger scale, such as calculating the distance between two stars in the universe.

We can find it in our own nature, when tracing the shortest distance traveled by a bee between two flowers, or by a bird flying from one point to another. The distance between two points is also present in our daily activities, such as checking the nearest point to catch a bus or using GPS apps that guide us on trips. In the field of science and technology, the concept is widely employed, whether in physics, biology, astronomy, engineering, computer science, among other disciplines.

Theoretical Introduction

The concept of 'Distance between Points' is a fundamental topic in the study of analytic geometry. It is based on the idea of calculating the distance between two points on a Cartesian plane, using the Pythagorean theorem. To fully understand it, we need to revisit it: in a right triangle, the square of the length of the hypotenuse (the side opposite the right angle) is equal to the sum of the squares of the lengths of the legs.

We apply it in analytic geometry to locate points on the plane and calculate distances. If we have two points, P1(x1, y1) and P2(x2, y2), the distance between them, d, can be calculated by the formula:

d = √ [(x2-x1)² + (y2-y1)²]

Thus, based on the knowledge of Cartesian coordinates and the Pythagorean theorem, we determine the distance between two points.

Project Objective

The objective of this activity is to apply the concept of distance between points in a real-world scenario, developing technical and socio-emotional skills such as time management, communication, problem-solving, creative thinking, and proactivity.

Detailed Project Description

Each group of students will be responsible for creating a fictional map of a city, using a two-dimensional space. In addition, students must model situations where the distance between points is necessary. For example, the distance traveled by a pizza delivery person to deliver an order, the shortest route for a taxi, the distance between a subway station and a hospital, among others.

Groups will present their map to the class and explain the relevance of the routes drawn. In addition, students will have to calculate the distances between the proposed points on their map, applying and demonstrating the concept learned in the classroom.

Required Materials

  • Large format graph paper (at least A3)
  • Pencils and erasers
  • Colored pens
  • Ruler
  • Calculator

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Completion

  1. Form groups of 3 to 5 students.

  2. Each group will receive graph paper for map creation.

  3. On the sheet, create a Cartesian plane and design your fictional city, indicating key points such as schools, hospitals, supermarkets, subway stations, among others. Each point should be represented by ordered pairs.

  4. Draw routes between different points and define 'scenarios' where the distance between these points is relevant.

  5. By calculating the distance between these points, use the formula learned in class.

  6. Document the entire process, from the map conception to the final calculations.

  7. Finally, make a presentation to the class, detailing the map, the scenarios, and how 'Distance between Points' was employed.

At the end of the project, create a detailed report, containing:

Introduction: Provide context for the activity and explain the purpose of creating the map and applying the concept of 'Distance between Points'. Describe the city and the scenarios you created.
