Contextualization

In this project, we will explore Polynomials - Remainder, a topic in mathematics that may seem complex at first glance, but is actually very interesting and useful once you understand it. Polynomials are mathematical expressions formed by variables and coefficients. They play a significant role in various areas of mathematics and are used to model and solve real-world problems.

To understand the remainder of division in polynomials, it is important to first establish a solid understanding of polynomials themselves. In simple terms, a polynomial is an expression consisting of variables (or indeterminates) and coefficients, which are combined using addition, subtraction, and multiplication operations. Each individual term in a polynomial has the form 'ax^n', where 'a' is the coefficient and 'n' is the degree of the term.

Polynomials play a significant role in the development of calculus and algebra. They are used in engineering to represent the laws of physics, in economics to model economic activity, in chemistry to calculate the properties of substances, among others.

When talking about polynomials and remainders, we refer to something known as the Remainder Theorem. This is a concept that allows us to find the remainder when a polynomial is divided by a binomial of the form x - a. The theorem offers a shortcut method to perform polynomial division and find the remainder without completing the division.

Polynomial division and identifying the remainder are essential skills in mathematics, necessary for solving a variety of complex problems. Knowledge of polynomials and how they are divided is crucial for progressing in more advanced mathematical studies. But the applicability of this knowledge goes beyond math classes: it is also useful in physics, engineering, economics, and other areas that heavily rely on mathematical calculations.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Exploring the Universe of Polynomials

Objective

The objective of this project is to deepen the knowledge about polynomials, particularly polynomial division and remainder calculation, through practical and theoretical activities, culminating in the creation of a presentation and final report.

Project Description

Students, in groups of 3 to 5, will explore various aspects of polynomials and their applications in various fields. The project was designed to be highly interactive, challenging, and diverse, requiring teamwork collaboration and intensive application of mathematical concepts.

Required Materials

Students will need:

  • Internet access for research.
  • Notebooks or paper for notes and calculations.
  • Computer with word processing software (Word, Google Docs) for report creation.
  • Symbolic calculation software (such as Wolfram Alpha or GeoGebra).

Project Step by Step

  1. Research on Polynomials: In this phase, students should research the concept of polynomials, their history, uses, and practical applications. All students should contribute to this activity.

  2. Practice with Polynomial Division: Now, students should familiarize themselves with the technique of polynomial division, through examples and practical problems. They should practice polynomial division and remainder calculation. It is recommended that they use symbolic calculation software to help solve the problems.

  3. Study of the Remainder Theorem: Based on the previous practice, students should explore the Remainder Theorem, understanding how it works and how it can be applied to quickly find the remainder of the division of a polynomial by a binomial.

  4. Exploring Applications of the Remainder Theorem: Students should investigate and discuss the applications of the Remainder Theorem in other disciplines, such as physics or economics. They should choose at least two applications and describe them in detail.

  5. Work Presentation: The group should prepare a presentation (virtual or physical) explaining the concepts they explored, the problems they solved, and the applications of the Remainder Theorem they discovered.

  6. Report Elaboration: Finally, each group should elaborate a detailed report of their findings. The report should be structured as an academic article, with sections of introduction, development, conclusions, and bibliography.

The report should have the following elements:

  • Introduction: Contextualization of the importance and applications of polynomials and the Remainder Theorem.
  • Development: Description of polynomial division methods and the Remainder Theorem. Detailed explanation of the practical activities carried out and presentation of the results.
  • Conclusions: Reflection on the learning obtained and the project's impact. What surprised the students the most? How will they apply what they have learned?
  • Bibliography: References to the resources used.

Project Deliverables

After completing the activities, the project deliverables will be:

  • The presentation (virtual or physical) of their findings and results.
  • The report, which should be a detailed written document presenting their results and reflections.

The two deliverables should be interconnected: the presentation should be a condensed version of the report, emphasizing the most important and interesting aspects of the project.

It is important for students to take this project seriously and engage in carrying out the activities and elaborating the report. This is not just an exercise in applying mathematical theory, but also an opportunity to learn how to work in a team, solve problems, communicate effectively, and apply knowledge in real-world contexts.
