Cartesian Plane: Points

Context

The Cartesian Plane is an important concept in mathematics. It was created in the 17th century by René Descartes, a French mathematician, writer and philosopher, and it is a graphical way to represent pairs of real numbers as a point in a plane. The position of each point is determined by a coordinate which is an ordered pair of numbers. Understanding how to locate points on the Cartesian plane is vital for studying many mathematical, physical and engineering concepts such as analytic geometry, calculus, physics, and computer modeling.

The x-coordinate (also known as the abscissa) represents the horizontal distance of the point from the origin, and the y-coordinate (also known as the ordinate) represents the vertical distance. The point where these two lines intersect on the plane is known as the origin, represented by the ordered pair (0,0). The plane is divided into four quadrants, each with its own characteristics regarding the signs of the coordinates of the points located there.

By locating points on the Cartesian plane, we can interpret variables and better understand their relationships. This has numerous real-world applications such as in economics, for the analysis of markets and trends; in geography, for locating points of interest on a map; in engineering and architecture, for the precise drawing of building plans; and in computing, for creating graphs and digital images, among many others.

Hands-on Activity - "Pinpoint on Map"

Project Goal

To develop students' understanding of a practical use of the Cartesian plane by locating and identifying points on a map.

Project Description

Students will work in groups of 3-5 to create a fictional city map and locate points of interest on the Cartesian plane. Students will learn to locate points on the Cartesian plane and understand how it is used to represent real-world geographic locations.

Materials

Graph paper, colored pencils, ruler, and colored markers.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Map creation: Each group should draw on graph paper a fictional city map including, but not limited to: streets, plazas, schools, hospitals, shops, houses, etc.

  2. Coordinate assignment: Next, students should assign Cartesian plane lines to be the streets of the city (x-axis for horizontal streets and y-axis for vertical streets), remembering to assign the origin (0,0) somewhere on the map.

  3. Plotting points of interest: Now, students should choose points of interest in their city (where they have placed schools, hospitals, shops, etc.) and plot them on the Cartesian plane, assigning coordinate pairs to each of them.

  4. Map presentation: Finally, each group will present their map to the class, explaining how they used the Cartesian plane to locate the points of interest.

Project Deliverables

In addition to the map, students should turn in a written report detailing their work.

  1. Introduction: Students should explain the purpose of the project: to demonstrate the functionality and application of the Cartesian plane in locating points on a map. They should mention the importance of the use of the Cartesian plane in various fields of knowledge.

  2. Development: In this section, students should thoroughly discuss the process of creating the map, naming the streets according to Cartesian coordinates, and locating the points of interest. It is important to explain the coordinates used for each point of interest and how they were determined.

  3. Conclusions: Students should restate the main points of the work, detailing what they learned about how the Cartesian plane is used to locate points. They should also mention the socio-emotional skills that were developed during the execution of the project such as teamwork, time management, critical thinking, and problem-solving.

  4. References: Finally, students should list the sources consulted during the elaboration of the project, be they books, academic websites, educational videos, among others.

The project should be completed in one month, and each student should spend five to ten hours working on it.
