Context

Polynomials are one of the most versatile tools in mathematics and are widely used in a variety of disciplines, from algebra to calculus and beyond. They are mathematical functions that form the basis for many aspects of mathematical analysis and have practical applications in diverse areas such as engineering, physics, economics, statistics, and computer science.

In this project, we will focus on the operation of polynomial division and, more specifically, on determining the remainder of this division. The ability to calculate the remainder has real implications that go beyond simple mathematical exercises. For example, in computer science, the remainder is used to determine the result of modular operations, which are vital for coding and encryption.

Introduction

Polynomial division is a fundamental operation in algebra that involves dividing one polynomial (the dividend) by another polynomial (the divisor). When a polynomial is divided by another, the result can be expressed as a quotient and a remainder. Calculating the remainder is a key skill that often appears in complex mathematical problems.

An effective method for calculating the remainder is the use of the Remainder Theorem. This theorem is a valuable tool because it allows for quickly calculating the remainder of a polynomial division without having to perform the division itself. It states that if a polynomial f(x) is divided by the binomial x - p, the remainder is equal to the value of f(p).

Polynomial division and the calculation of the remainder are not only important mathematical skills but also illustrate fundamental concepts that are vital for studying more advanced and complex topics in mathematics.

Practical Activity: "The Game of the Remainder"

Project Objective

This project aims at the analysis and manipulation of polynomials, focusing on calculating the remainder in polynomial divisions. Students will be challenged to create a "Game of the Remainder," where they must use their theoretical and practical knowledge to calculate remainders of polynomial divisions.

Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 students. Each group will create a game board containing polynomial divisions. The board cells will be filled with the quotients of these divisions, and players will have to calculate the remainder to advance in the game.

Required Materials

  • Cardboard sheet or cardboard for building the game board.
  • Colored cardboards for creating division cards.
  • Colored markers for drawing and writing on the board and cards.
  • Game pawns (can be any small object to represent the players).

Step by Step

  1. Board Creation: Each group must create a game board. The board should be designed to have a path with several squares. You can be creative with the path design.

  2. Card Creation: On colored cardboards, groups should create several cards. Each card should have a polynomial division.

  3. Game Rules: The game rules should be defined by the group. The suggestion is: each player, on their turn, picks a card and needs to calculate the remainder of the polynomial division presented on the card. The player advances the number of squares equal to the obtained remainder. If the remainder is 0, the player does not advance.

  4. Playing: After creating the game, groups should play and test the game to ensure that it is working correctly and is challenging.

Deliverables

  1. Game Board and Cards: The game board and cards developed by the group will be delivered to the teacher and will serve as evidence of the work done.

  2. Final Report: The final project report should be written following the four main topics: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography used. The introduction should contextualize the theme Polynomials - Remainder and explain its importance in the real world. The development should detail the project, explaining how the game was created, game rules, and the methodology used. The conclusion should bring the learnings obtained during the project, and analyze how effective the game is for learning the calculation of remainders of polynomial divisions. The bibliography used should be indicated, showing where the group based their work to carry out the project.

This project should be completed in one week, and each student should spend between two and four hours on it. Remember that teamwork and communication are very important skills for the completion of this project and should be used to the fullest!
