Introduction

Reflection is one of the isometric transformations that maintains the sizes and shapes of figures, but changes their position in the plane or space. It occurs when we "turn" a figure in relation to a certain axis. This concept is widely applied in various areas of knowledge, such as physics, engineering, and arts.

Understanding how reflection works and how to apply it not only enhances our ability to solve mathematical problems but also helps us better understand the natural world and human creations. This is because we can see the concept of reflection in action in natural phenomena and human productions.

In addition to reflection, we will also explore the concepts of translation and rotation, two other isometric transformations, as well as homothetic transformations. These concepts are fundamental for a complete understanding of geometric transformations.

Project Objective

The project aims to explore the concept of isometric transformations (reflection, translation, rotation, and compositions of these) and homothetic transformations, creating a piece of art inspired by nature that will demonstrate the application of these transformations in practice.

Project Description

The student groups will choose a natural object (such as a flower, a leaf, a shell, etc.) or a natural phenomenon (such as the pattern of a spider web, the shape of a galaxy, the branches of a lightning, etc.) to study. The group will then create an artistic piece (it can be a drawing, a painting, a sculpture, etc.) that incorporates the studied geometric transformations.

  • Paper, pencil, ruler, compass, and flat mirror for drawings.
  • Art materials for the creation of the final piece (may vary depending on the group's choice).
