Contextualization

The study of Politics is quite old, dating back to the times of great thinkers of Ancient Greece, such as Plato and Aristotle. Politics is a manifestation of human activity that involves the organization, structuring and distribution of power in a society, directly affecting human relations at all levels. It is important to understand that politics is not only what happens in government spheres, but permeates all social relations.

Power, in turn, is a complex philosophical concept that refers to the capacity to do or act, to influence others and to control resources. Power can be seen both as a positive force, when used to promote social justice, and as a negative force, when it is used to oppress and exploit. Thus, the relationship between politics and power is intrinsic, since power is the main instrument through which politics manifests itself.

Understanding politics and power is fundamental to understanding the organization of human societies and our capacity to act collectively. This project proposes a multidisciplinary approach that involves Philosophy, Sociology and History, in order to provide a deeper and richer understanding of these concepts.

Importance of the Theme

The concepts of politics and power are present in our daily lives and in several spheres of our existence. Such as in our school, in the relationship with our peers, in the laws that govern our society, in government decisions, among others. It is through politics, and the use of power, that decisions that impact our daily lives are made.

Thinking critically about these themes is vital for an active and conscious citizen participation. Furthermore, understanding these concepts and their implications helps to form individuals who value freedom, cooperation, autonomy, entrepreneurship, democratic coexistence and solidarity.

Practical Activity: Simulation of a Political Society

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to allow students to explore the concepts of politics and power through a hands-on simulation. This will allow students to understand how different political structures operate, the role of power within them, and to consider the ethical and social implications of different forms of power.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5. Each group will represent a distinct "society". Within these societies, students must establish a political structure, define who has power and how this power is acquired and exercised.

The following key topics/concepts will be discussed and explored: Politics, Power, forms of government (Democracy, Monarchy, Dictatorship, etc), social justice, ethics in politics, corruption, human rights, and social responsibility.

Before the simulation, each group will study in depth a specific form of government and will prepare a presentation based on their research.

After that, each group must establish their societies, including the following tasks:

1. Decide which form of government their society will adopt (democracy, monarchy, dictatorship, etc.).
2. Determine who holds power in their society and how this person or group acquired such power.
3. Discuss and define how decisions will be made in their society.
4. Propose policies for their society and implement them (symbolically).
5. Navigate through a set of "events" that will be presented by the teacher and respond to them as a society.

Materials Required

1. Paper and pens to write down the ideas and decide the structure of the society.
2. Computer with internet access to do research.
3. PowerPoint or similar presentation for the class presentation.

1. Division of groups and presentation of the project.
2. Research on forms of government and preparation of the presentation.
3. Presentation of the research in class.
4. Each group holds a meeting to define the political structure of their society.
5. Symbolic implementation of policies and response to events.
6. Final review of the whole process and preparation of the report.

Project Deliverables and Connection with the Activity

In the end, each group must write a collective report that includes:

1. Introduction: Presentation of the society and project objectives.
2. Development: Detailed description of the chosen form of government, explanation of the decisions made regarding power in their society, implemented policies, occurred events and how they were dealt with.
3. Conclusions: Reflection on the process, learning from the project (especially about the concepts of politics and power), and implications of the results.
4. Bibliography: List of all sources of information used

The report must contain a critical analysis of how power was acquired, distributed and exercised in their simulated society, as well as the social and ethical implications of these processes. The group must also discuss social responsibility and human rights, in relation to power in their society.

The document must complement the practical work, offering a reflection and theoretical analysis of what was experienced during the simulation. Students must bring studied concepts to explain and discuss the decisions they made and the events that occurred.
