Sound intensity, or sound level, is a logarithmic measure in decibels (dB) related to the power of the sound reaching a unit area (usually 1 square meter) and reaching the human ear. It is expressed by the formula I = P/A, where I is the intensity, P is the power, and A is the area. In addition, factors such as the distance from the sound source and the characteristics of the medium through which the sound propagates influence the perception of sound intensity.

In the real world, sound intensity plays a crucial role in various applications. In acoustical engineering, for example, this concept is used to design concert halls that provide a pleasant sound experience for everyone in the audience, regardless of where they are seated. In medicine, certain therapies use ultrasound of varying intensities to treat conditions such as kidney stones and gallstones.

Furthermore, understanding sound intensity is essential for preserving our hearing health. Continuous exposure to high-intensity sounds can result in temporary or permanent damage to hearing. Project Objective

The objective of this activity is to apply the concept of sound intensity in practice, leading students to understand what it is, how to calculate it, and how it is affected by different factors. In addition, students will have the opportunity to develop important skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, creative thinking, and time management.

Detailed Project Description

In this practical project, groups of students (3 to 5 members) will be challenged to develop and conduct an experiment involving sound intensity. The suggested experiment involves using a smartphone app for decibel measurement, a speaker, and a tape measure. The experiment aims to measure the variation of sound intensity with the variation of distance from the sound source.

Required Materials

  • Smartphone with a decibel measurement app (several free apps available)
  • Speaker
  • Music or any type of sound to be played on the speaker
  • Tape measure
  • Notebook and pen for notes
  • Computer for data tabulation and analysis

Step-by-Step Guide for the Activity

  1. Choose the location for the experiment. Make sure it is a place where external noise is minimal.

  2. Place the speaker in the chosen location and select the music or sound to be played.

  3. Using the tape measure, mark distances of 1 meter increments from the speaker up to 10 meters.

  4. With the decibel measurement app open on the smartphone, start playing the sound on the speaker.

  5. At each meter mark, record the decibel meter reading. Do this up to the 10-meter mark.

  6. Repeat step 5 at least three times to obtain an average for each point.

  7. Data compilation: Record all data collected from the experiment in a table, including distances and respective decibel measurements.

  8. Data analysis: Using a spreadsheet software, plot a graph of sound intensity in decibels as a function of distance. Analyze and discuss the results obtained.
