Contextualization

Light reflection is a widely studied physical phenomenon and is one of the fundamental pillars of geometric optics. When light propagates and encounters a surface that separates two mediums, part of it returns to the original medium, which is what we call reflection. This phenomenon is governed by a very important law: the law of reflection, which establishes that the angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection.

Reflection is further classified into two types: specular reflection and diffuse reflection. In specular reflection, the rays of light reflect in the same plane, which occurs when light strikes smooth and polished surfaces. On the other hand, in diffuse reflection, the rays reflect in different directions, which happens when light strikes rough surfaces or irregularities at a microscopic level.

Light reflection has practical implications that permeate our daily lives, from looking at ourselves in the mirror to complex technological applications. It is through reflection that we see the objects around us. When light hits a surface, it is reflected in all directions, and some of that light reaches our eyes, allowing us to perceive the objects.

Furthermore, light reflection has practical scientific and technological applications. It is essential in the making of mirrors and lenses, essential elements in optical instruments such as microscopes, telescopes, cameras, and projectors. It also has applications in engineering, specifically in the design of ambient lighting systems and in the creation of optical fibers.

Title: "Exploring Light Reflection through Flat Mirrors"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to investigate the phenomenon of light reflection through practical activities involving flat mirrors. Through the completion of these activities, students should be able to understand the law of reflection, differentiate between specular and diffuse reflection, and apply theoretical concepts in practice.

Detailed Project Description

In this project, groups will need to carry out three practical activities: specular and diffuse reflection test, construction of a periscope using reflection, and testing the law of reflection. After completing the activities, each group will write a scientific report detailing the process and results.

Required Materials

  1. Flat mirror
  2. Laser or flashlight
  3. White cardboard
  4. Cardboard angle
  5. Millimeter paper
  6. Ruler and compass
  7. Adhesive tape
  8. Colored pens

Detailed Step-by-Step

Activity 1: Specular and Diffuse Reflection Test

  1. Using the flashlight or laser, direct the light onto the flat mirror and observe the pattern of reflected light.
  2. Replace the surface of the flat mirror with a rough surface and repeat the previous step.
  3. Compare the patterns of light obtained and discuss the difference between specular reflection and diffuse reflection.

Activity 2: Construction of a Periscope

  1. Use the cardboard angle, two flat mirrors, and adhesive tape to build a periscope.
  2. Check if the periscope is working correctly by observing an object through it.
  3. Discuss how light reflection allows the periscope to function.

Activity 3: Law of Reflection Test

  1. Place the flat mirror on the millimeter paper.
  2. Using the flashlight or laser, direct the light onto the mirror, forming a known angle with the normal to the mirrored surface.
  3. Measure the angle formed by the reflected ray and the normal.
  4. Verify if the angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection, according to the law of reflection.

After completing the activities, each group should produce a detailed report containing the following topics:

  1. Introduction: Contextualization of the light reflection theme and relevance of the project.
  2. Development: Explanation of the theory of light reflection, detailed description of the activities carried out, with illustrations and photos if possible, and presentation and discussion of the results obtained in each activity.
  3. Conclusion: Reflections on the work done, lessons learned, and conclusions drawn about the project.
  4. Bibliography: Indication of the information sources used for the project.

Remember that the goal of the project is not just to obtain a result, but to learn during the process, so the report should capture this collective learning experience.
