Flat Mirror: Image Formation

Context

Physics, in its vast field of studies, presents us with several themes that are intrinsically linked to our daily lives. One of these themes is optics, which studies the characteristics and properties of light. In this sense, among the fundamentals of optics is the study of mirrors, elements that, perhaps without us realizing it, are all around us all the time, from household mirrors to vehicle rearview mirrors. In this project, we will focus on flat mirrors, one of the most common types of mirrors we encounter in our daily lives.

A flat mirror is one in which the reflecting surface is flat. You may have noticed that when you look at a flat mirror, your image appears to be on the other side, at a distance equal to the one you are from the mirror. This happens because light, when incident on a flat surface, reflects forming an angle equal to that of the incident ray. This phenomenon is called the reflection of light, and it is responsible for the formation of our image in a mirror.

In this context, we realize that the study of flat mirrors and the reflection of light on flat surfaces is essential for understanding how we see things around us and even how we see ourselves. Furthermore, such a study has a range of applications, such as in the manufacturing of periscopes, in the design of security circuits, in the construction of telescopes, among many others.

Flat mirrors also have notable applications in the healthcare field, being used, for example, in endoscopy devices and mirrored contact lenses. In addition, the reflection of light on flat mirrors is widely used in interior design, as a way to visually expand the space of a room.

Therefore, we encourage you to explore more about the subject, seeking to understand the key concepts and their applications. Practical Activity

Activity Title: Reflections on Flat Mirrors

Project Objective: The objective of this project is to carry out a practical experiment to understand the theoretical concept of light reflection on flat mirrors and the formation of images.

Project Description: In this work, students will conduct a simple yet interesting experiment involving the use of a flat mirror, an object, and a bit of light. The experiment should provide a visual representation of what is discussed in theory, allowing students a better understanding of the topic.

  • Group: The project should be carried out by groups of 3 to 5 students.
  • Duration: The project has an estimated duration of two to four hours per student.

Materials Needed:

  1. A flat mirror.
  2. A ruler.
  3. Small object (can be any object like a pen, for example).
  4. Flashlight.
  5. Paper and pen for drawing.

Step by Step:

  1. Find a suitable location for the experiment, preferably a dark environment.
  2. Position the flat mirror on a flat surface.
  3. Place the object in front of the mirror at a certain distance.
  4. Use the flashlight to illuminate the object.
  5. Observe the image formed in the mirror.
  6. Use the ruler to measure the distance from the object to the mirror and the distance from the image formed behind the mirror.
  7. Repeat the experiment by varying the distance from the object to the mirror and record the respective distances of the images formed behind the mirror.
  8. Draw diagrams representing each stage of the experiment.
  9. Analyze and discuss the results obtained.

Project Deliverables:

After conducting the practical experiment, students should write a report containing the following topics:

  • Introduction: Contextualization of the theme, its relevance and application in the real world as well as the objective of the experiment project carried out.
  • Development: They should explain the theory behind flat mirrors and image formation, detail the practical activity carried out, and finally present and discuss the results obtained in the experiment.
  • Conclusion: Students should revisit their main points, explain the learnings obtained, and draw conclusions about the project.
  • Bibliography: Indication of the sources they relied on to work on the project such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

Remember that the objective of this project is not only to understand the theory involved in the reflection of light by flat mirrors, but also to develop skills such as teamwork, proactivity, organization, creativity, among other important characteristics in learning.
