Concave and convex mirrors are all around us much more than we realize. They are used in a variety of applications and have intriguing properties that are fundamental in optical physics. In this project, we will be exploring these properties and applying our knowledge to better understand our world.

Concave mirrors are called so because the reflective surface has the shape of a concave section, meaning it caves in. They are also known as converging mirrors due to their ability to reflect parallel rays of light to a single point. This is what makes them useful in applications such as telescopes and car headlights.

Convex mirrors, on the other hand, have a reflective surface that curves outward. They are diverging, which means they spread parallel rays of light. Due to this property, convex mirrors are used to provide a wider field of view, as is the case with car rearview mirrors.

Our world is full of examples of concave and convex mirrors. Think of a car's headlights, an astronomer's telescope, or even a convenience store mirror. All are examples of how these concepts of optical physics are applied. These mirrors allow us to see beyond, both literally and figuratively. Activity Title: Exploring Images: Concave and Convex Mirrors

Project Objective

The purpose of this project is to allow you, through simple practical experiments, to observe the images formed by concave and convex mirrors, understanding their characteristics and applications in everyday life.

Detailed Project Description

Groups, composed of 3 to 5 students, will need to carry out two main experiments, one for each type of mirror. You will study, in practice, the behavior of light and how it is reflected in these mirrors, thus gaining a deeper understanding of the topic.

Required Materials

  • Concave mirror
  • Convex mirror
  • Red laser (can be from a laser pointer)
  • Tape measure or ruler
  • Cardboard or A4 paper
  • Fixing support for the mirrors
  • Colored pens

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

  1. Concave Mirror
  • Position the concave mirror in the fixing support.
  • With the help of the red laser, emit rays of light towards the mirror, at different angles, observing the behavior of the reflected rays.
  • Take notes of the observations.
  • Draw on a sheet the rays of light and the mirror, representing what was observed.
  1. Convex Mirror
  • Now, repeat the above steps, but this time using the convex mirror.
  • Take notes of the observations again.
  • Make the same drawing on the sheet, representing the rays of light and the mirror.

After conducting the experiments, each group must write a report containing the following topics:

  1. Introduction: Provide context to the theme, explaining the relevance of concave and convex mirrors and their applications in everyday life, as well as the project's objective.

  2. Development: Explain the theory of concave and convex mirrors and the characteristics of the images formed. Detail the activity performed, describing the methodology used and presenting and discussing the results obtained.

  3. Conclusion: Summarize the main points of the work, explaining the learnings obtained and the conclusions drawn about the project. Provide a critical analysis of the results and discuss possible applications in daily life.

  4. Bibliography: Indicate the sources used to base the work (books, web pages, videos, etc).

All groups will have one month to deliver the finalized project. It is recommended that each student dedicate between five to ten hours to carry out the work.
