But, have you ever stopped to think about the physical laws that govern the behavior of light when interacting with a plane mirror?
In this project, we will delve into this topic, exploring the principle of operation of plane mirrors, specifically the issue of rotating these mirrors and what happens to the reflected light in these circumstances.
Introduction
The study of mirrors is a basic point of geometric optics. Plane mirrors are polished surfaces where the reflection of incident light occurs regularly. This means that the light that hits the mirror at a certain angle relative to its surface will be reflected at the same angle. But, what happens when we rotate the mirror?
The phenomenon of rotating the plane mirror is fascinating! When light hits a plane mirror and it is rotated by an angle, the reflected light ray rotates by twice that angle. This is a surprising and counterintuitive concept.

Practical Activity: "Rotating Light"
Project Objective
You will develop a practical experiment to understand the rotation of a plane mirror and how the angle of reflection changes when the mirror is rotated.
Detailed Project Description
The experiment consists of the practical visualization of the phenomenon of rotating the plane mirror. You will set up a scenario where you can rotate a plane mirror and observe how the reflected light ray changes.
Each group of 3 to 5 students should plan and execute the experiment, including setting up the scenario, collecting data, analyzing the data, and preparing the results report.
Necessary Materials
- A small plane mirror that can be easily rotated
- A light beam; a flashlight is a good option
- A large cardboard sheet
- A protractor
- A pencil
- Adhesive tape
Step by Step
- Fix the plane mirror in the center of the cardboard sheet with adhesive tape so that it can rotate around a fixed point.
- Draw a straight line, which will be your reference line, on the cardboard sheet. The line should pass through the central point of rotation of the mirror.
- Position the flashlight so that the light beam hits the mirror forming a 30° angle with the reference line.
- Mark the reflected light ray on the cardboard.
- Now, rotate the mirror by 10°. Draw again where the reflected ray ends up.
- Repeat step 5, rotating the mirror by another 10°, until you have rotated a total of 90°.
- Using the protractor, measure the angle formed between the reference line and the reflected ray at each rotation. Note these values.
- With the collected data, create a graph showing the relationship between the mirror's rotation angle (x-axis) and the reflection angle (y-axis).

At the end of the project, each group must submit a detailed report of their findings. The report should follow the structure:
- Introduction: Present the context, theme, and objective of the project. Discuss the principle of operation of plane mirrors and the physical phenomenon of the project. Briefly describe the experiment, explaining its purpose.

- Conclusions: Conclude the work by discussing what the results mean and how they relate to the concept of rotating the plane mirror. Discuss what you learned from the experiment and any difficulties you faced.
