The terms 'volume,' 'pitch,' and 'timbre' refer to different dimensions of sound that are produced by different physical vibrations. A sound wave is a physical vibration that propagates through a medium, such as air, and is received by our ears.

Pitch and Timbre

The 'pitch' of a sound refers to the frequency of the sound wave, which determines whether the sound is high or low. In technical terms, pitch is the human perception of the wave's frequency. On the other hand, 'timbre' refers to the quality of the sound that allows us to distinguish different types of sounds when the pitch and volume are the same. For example, the difference that allows us to distinguish the note C played on a piano and the same note played on a guitar is the timbre.

Real-World Applications

  1. Research and Planning [2 hours]: Start with a group discussion about the concepts of pitch and timbre. Identify examples of sounds with different pitches and timbres in music. Choose the sounds/instruments you will use in the presentation.

  2. Musical Creation and Recording [3 hours]: Create a 'music' or sound sequence that demonstrates variations in pitch and timbre. Using the sound editing program, record the different sounds.

  3. Sound Analysis [3 hours]: Use the sound editing software to visualize the different sound waves you recorded. Notice how pitch (frequency) and timbre (waveform) are visually represented. Discuss as a group what you noticed and record your observations.
