Nominal Agreement

Contextualization

Nominal Agreement is one of the areas of grammar responsible for the harmony between words in a sentence, that is, it deals with the correct way to combine terms in an expression or a sentence. If you have ever been in a situation where you were unsure whether to use 'grande parte dos alunos' (a large part of the students) or 'grande parte dos aluno' (a large part of the student), you have encountered Nominal Agreement. Understanding and correctly applying Nominal Agreement is essential to improve your communication and expression skills in the Portuguese language.

Nominal Agreement is mainly based on four rules: agreement of adjective with noun, agreement of article with noun, agreement of adjective pronoun with noun, and agreement of numerals with nouns. Although it may seem complex, with practice and concrete applications, you will be able to master these principles.

We know that grammar may seem like a distant subject from the 'real world', but Nominal Agreement is applied all the time in our daily communication. The correct application of agreement rules provides clarity and precision in communication, avoiding misunderstandings and making conversations more efficient. Furthermore, a good command of Nominal Agreement can bring you practical benefits, such as better performance in exams, job interviews, presentations, and even in your daily social interactions.

Therefore, this project is focused on exploring Nominal Agreement in a real and practical context. Through research, group discussions, and the creation of presentations, you will have the opportunity to delve into the topic, as well as acquire important skills, including teamwork, time management, and critical thinking.

To deepen your knowledge on the subject, we recommend the following sources:

  • Book 'Gramática da Língua Portuguesa' (Grammar of the Portuguese Language), by Maria Helena Mira Mateus, Ana Maria Brito, Inês Duarte, and Isabel Hub Faria. It is a comprehensive book on grammar, including a detailed chapter on nominal agreement.

  • Articles on the InfoEscola website, especially this one on nominal agreement.

  • Portuguese video lessons from the YouTube channel 'GramáticaEmVídeo - Prof. Fábio Alves'.

Remember that teamwork will be an important point for the success of this project. Take this opportunity to exchange ideas, share knowledge, and learn from each other!

Practical Activity: Conquest of Nominal Agreement

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to apply and explore nominal agreement in a practical and dynamic context, addressing cultural and historical elements to bring grammar to life.

Project Description

Each group will be responsible for selecting a Portuguese-speaking country (Brazil, Portugal, Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, São Tomé and Príncipe, Timor-Leste, Macau). They should research the culture, history, and social aspects of the chosen country and subsequently prepare a presentation, an article, and an interview script.

  • Presentation: Should be aimed at the class, highlighting cultural, historical, and social aspects of the chosen country, without forgetting to demonstrate the application of nominal agreement in speech.

  • Article: The topic is at the group's discretion, however, once again nominal agreement must be demonstrated through examples in the text. The article should be of an academic level, that is, it should present an introduction, development, and conclusion, as well as correctly apply the ABNT standards.

  • Interview script: Should be prepared for a fictional personality from the chosen country. The script should be creative, yet formal, using nominal agreement rules correctly.

These activities will not only foster learning of nominal agreement but also bring out important aspects of the culture of Portuguese-speaking countries, connecting the Portuguese discipline with History and Geography.

Necessary Materials

For the project implementation, groups will need:

  • Internet access for research
  • Books, websites, and reference materials on nominal agreement and the culture of Portuguese-speaking countries
  • Material for the preparation of the presentation (PowerPoint, Google Slides, etc.)
  • Computer/Notebook for writing the article and the script

Project Step by Step

  1. Formation of groups and country selection by drawing lots.

  2. Extensive and in-depth research on the chosen country, focusing on culture, history, social aspects, as well as the use of nominal agreement in the Portuguese language spoken in the region.

  3. Elaboration of the interview script, article, and presentation with the correct use of nominal agreement.

  4. Review of the script, article, and presentation by the group to ensure correct nominal agreement.

  5. Presentation to the class, demonstrating the acquired knowledge.

  6. Submission of the article and interview script for evaluation.

Project Deliverables and Connection with Activities

The project deliverables will be the interview script, the article, and the presentation, all of which must practically apply the rules of nominal agreement. Additionally, the project should culminate in the production of a written document by the students, where they will report on the project stages.

In this document, the introduction should contextualize the chosen country, the relevance of nominal agreement, and the project's objective. In the development, the nominal agreement theory should be presented, the activities explained in detail, the methodology used, and the results obtained discussed. In the conclusion, the group should reflect on the learnings, the application of nominal agreement, and the experiences during the project. In the bibliography, indicate the sources used for research.
