The world is full of texts. Wherever we look, we see information being conveyed through words, images, sounds, and each of these elements has its own characteristics, organizing themselves in different ways. These forms of organization are called textual genres.

In this project, we will delve into the analysis of textual genres in the Spanish language, exploring different types of texts such as literature, journalism, advertising, and much more. Understanding textual genres is essential to improve reading and writing skills in any language.

Textual genres are specific ways in which language is used for a particular purpose in a particular context. They can be formally defined and taught or can be learned intuitively as people become familiar with the linguistic practices of a community.

Learning about textual genres in the context of the Spanish language goes beyond simply acquiring a new linguistic skill. It is a way to discover more about Spanish and Latin American culture, as textual genres are deeply rooted in the cultural practices and traditions of a community.

This interdisciplinary project combines the Spanish Language and Literature, exploring the use of language in different textual formats.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Discovering Textual Genres in the Spanish Language"

Project Objective:

This project aims to expand students' knowledge of different textual genres in the Spanish language and, at the same time, develop their reading, writing, analysis, and comprehension skills of various genre texts. The ultimate goal is to produce a group report that analyzes five different textual genres, exemplified by authentic texts in the Spanish language.

Detailed Project Description:

Each group of students (3 to 5 people) will choose five different textual genres in Spanish to analyze. Textual genres can vary from newspaper articles, novels, poems, plays, songs, advertising texts, academic texts, among others. For each textual genre, the group must:

• Identify its main characteristics (structure, language used, purpose, context, etc.);
• Find an authentic example of this text in Spanish;
• Analyze this text, highlighting specific characteristics of the textual genre and how they manifest in the chosen example;
• Discuss the role of Spanish and Latin American culture in the chosen example.

Required Materials:

1. Internet access for research and text consultation;
2. Notebook or digital medium for notes;
3. Support materials such as books, articles, dictionaries, etc.

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution:

1. Group Formation: Students will divide into groups of 3 to 5 people.

2. Selection of Textual Genres: Each group will choose five different textual genres to analyze.

3. Research: Each group member will be responsible for researching one of the chosen textual genres and finding an authentic example in Spanish for analysis.

4. Text Analysis: Once all group members have conducted their research and chosen the texts, the group will meet (virtually or in person) to discuss the characteristics of each textual genre and analyze the chosen texts.

5. Report Writing: After analysis and discussion, the group will write a report in the format of an academic article, containing the following topics: Introduction, Methodology, Development (where each textual genre and example will be discussed), Conclusion, and Bibliography.

The project is long-term, with an estimated working time of 15 to 20 hours per student, totaling between 60 to 100 hours of work for a group of 4 students, for example. It involves research, analysis, writing, reading, teamwork, and presentation skills.

The final product of the project will be a report written by the group, following the format of an academic article. The report should include an introduction explaining the theme and relevance of studying textual genres, a methodology section where students will explain how they conducted the research and analysis, a development section where each textual genre and example will be discussed, a conclusion where students will summarize their findings and learnings, and finally, the bibliography indicating all sources used in the project.

The report should be written in Spanish and will be the main form of project evaluation, so it is essential that students dedicate a considerable amount of time to its preparation, ensuring that it clearly and comprehensively addresses all aspects discussed and analyzed throughout the project.
