Scientific Technical Vocabulary

Contextualization

Technical-scientific vocabulary is a specialized form of language used by scientists and researchers in their respective fields of study. The importance of learning this language lies in the fact that it allows students to understand complex and profound concepts in specific fields of study, as well as improve their reading and interpretation skills of scientific texts.

Often, technical-scientific language is seen as a barrier to understanding science, but this perspective begins to change when students perceive it as a powerful tool for acquiring knowledge. For high school students, mastering this language in their mother tongue is already a challenge. Imagine then the difficulty and, at the same time, the value of learning it in another language. Learning technical-scientific vocabulary in Spanish will allow you to expand your horizons of reading and research, being able to access scientific documents from Spanish-speaking countries, which are numerous.

Learning technical-scientific vocabulary should not be a daunting task, but rather an engaging and stimulating process. Therefore, in this project, you will be challenged to explore technical-scientific vocabulary in Spanish in a creative and fun way.

Introduction

Technical-scientific vocabulary is a set of specific terms and phrases used in different fields of science. These terms are essential for communication and sharing ideas and discoveries in a field of study. However, this vocabulary can be quite challenging for those who are not familiar with it. It is like learning a new language, but one that is rich in the rigor and precision required by the scientific method.

Spanish is the second most spoken language in the world in terms of native speakers, and it is also the second most studied language, behind only English. Therefore, learning scientific language in Spanish is of invaluable value, not only for your academic development but also to increase your professional opportunities.

Knowledge of technical-scientific vocabulary in Spanish will allow access to study materials produced in Spanish-speaking countries, as well as participation in scientific discussions with speakers of that language. This will make you more versatile and prepared for an increasingly globalized world.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Exploring the Cosmos of Technical-Scientific Vocabulary in Spanish"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to familiarize students with technical-scientific vocabulary in Spanish through research, collaborative learning, and creative presentation of their understanding.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people, and each group will be tasked with selecting and researching a scientific area of their choice (for example, biology, chemistry, physics, astronomy, among others). They should identify and learn at least 30 technical-scientific terms in Spanish related to that area.

Subsequently, each group must develop and present an interactive activity to teach these terms to the rest of the class. It can be a board game, a digital quiz, an explanatory video, or any other format they consider appropriate and engaging.

Required Materials

Internet access for research, materials for preparing the presentation (paper, pen, digital resources, etc.), materials needed to create the interactive activity, such as cardboard, cards, markers, or computer programs, depending on the chosen format.

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

  1. Form groups and have each group choose a science area to research.

  2. Research and select at least 30 technical-scientific terms in Spanish related to the chosen area. Make sure to understand the meaning and usage of each term.

  3. For each term, you should find a text in Spanish (article, paper, book excerpt, etc.) where the term is used. Note down the references of these texts.

  4. Develop an interactive activity to teach these terms to the rest of the class. The activity should be fun, involve all group members, and take approximately 20 minutes to complete.

  5. Prepare to present your activity to the class and be ready to explain each term in detail.

  6. Finally, write a report detailing the activity creation process, including all phases from term research to activity execution. The report should include an introduction, development, conclusions, and bibliography.

Project Deliverables

  • Implementation of the interactive activity in the classroom.

  • Oral presentation to the class about the chosen scientific area and the researched terms.

  • Written report containing:

    • Introduction: Should include the contextualization of the chosen study area, the relevance of technical-scientific vocabulary, and the applicability of the selected terms.

    • Development: Here, describe the research and term selection process, the preparation of the interactive activity, and the methodology used. Present and discuss the results obtained during the activity presentation.

    • Conclusions: Here, summarize the main points addressed throughout the work, such as the research and term selection process, the creation of the interactive activity, and the class's reaction during the activity. Additionally, reflect on what you learned throughout the project.

    • Bibliography used: List all sources used for term research, including books, websites, videos, among others.

Each stage of delivery (interactive activity, oral presentation, and written report) will be evaluated according to predefined criteria.
