Learning a new language is more than just memorizing grammar rules and expanding your vocabulary. It is a way to explore other cultures and perspectives. In the case of Spanish, one of the most spoken languages in the world, with a presence in many countries and cultures, this exploration becomes an even richer journey.

The objective of this project is to delve into Spanish vocabulary, focusing on three areas: animals, plants, and parts of the human body. These are common conversation topics that frequently appear in various situations, whether in a biology class, during a visit to the doctor, or even in a casual conversation with a native Spanish speaker.

Introduction

Mastering the vocabulary of a language is essential to communicate effectively and understand the cultural context in which that language is spoken. In our project, we will explore three areas of Spanish vocabulary: animals, plants, and parts of the human body. These topics are not only useful in everyday life but also provide an interesting context to understand the diversity in different Spanish-speaking cultures.

For example, animals and plants are an important part of traditions and legends in many cultures. They are also often used as metaphors and idiomatic expressions. As for parts of the human body, they are not only useful for expressing pain or joy but are also used in many idiomatic and cultural expressions.

In this project, we will delve into these topics, not only to expand our vocabulary but also to explore the culture and traditions of Spanish-speaking countries.

Practical Activity: 'Exploring the Hispanic World'

Project Objective

Consolidate the vocabulary related to animals, plants, and parts of the human body in Spanish and, simultaneously, investigate and interpret the cultural uses of these words in the various Spanish-speaking regions.

Detailed Project Description

Students will create a 'Linguistic Travel Book.' Each group will be responsible for exploring a Spanish-speaking region, in relation to the cultural use and meaning of words related to animals, plants, and parts of the human body.

This book must be digital, containing texts, images, audios, videos, and interactive activities, such as quizzes or games, that students create to help consolidate the investigated vocabulary.

Necessary Materials

1. Computer with internet access for research and creation of the digital book.
2. Digital platforms for the execution of the book, such as Book Creator or Canva.
3. Software or online resources for creating quizzes and games.

Step by Step

1. Group Formation and Region Selection: Students must divide into groups of 3 to 5 members. Each group must choose a Spanish-speaking region to explore.

2. Research: Each group must research and take notes on all words related to the three themes: animals, plants, and parts of the human body.

3. Cultural Investigation: Groups must investigate the use of these words in the chosen region. They should look for idiomatic expressions, metaphors, legends, traditions, etc., involving these terms.

4. Creation of the Linguistic Travel Book: Each group must create an interactive digital book containing all the collected information. This book should have different sections for each of the three topics, with subsections for each specific word or phrase that students decide to explore in depth.

5. Presentation: Groups will present their books to the class. During the presentations, students must explain the words and phrases they investigated and how they are culturally used in the chosen region.

Project Deliverables

1. Linguistic Travel Book: The final product of this project will be an interactive digital book. The book must be structured clearly, with an introduction section, sections for each of the three topics, and a conclusion section. Each group must include at least 10 words related to each of the three topics in the book.

2. Written Report: In addition to the digital book, students must produce a detailed project report. The report should follow the following format:

• Introduction: Should include the project objective, the region chosen by the group and why it was chosen, as well as the relevance of the topics investigated in that region.
• Development: In this section, students must detail the words, phrases, and expressions they investigated. They should explain the meaning of these words and how they are culturally used in the chosen region.
• Conclusion: Students must reflect on what they learned from the project. They should discuss how this project helped them improve their Spanish vocabulary and understand the culture of the chosen region.
• Bibliography: Students must cite all sources used for research.

3. Presentation: Each group must give a 15-20 minute presentation to the class where they explain the main points of their book and highlight some interesting aspects of their research.

This project should take about 5 to 10 hours per student to complete and has a deadline of one month from the start date.
