Contextualization

In recent years, literature has been staging a growing female representation, both in terms of protagonist in the narrative and the participation of women as authors. This change reflects a broader social tendency in which gender issues and equality are debated and questioned. Positions of power and representation, historically dominated by men, are undergoing gradual transformation, and literature is one of the fronts where this transformation is taking place.

Current literature trends such as feminism, Afrofeminist literature, and queer literature explore different female experiences in a realistic and inventive way. They question women's place in society and the literary system, highlighting issues such as marginalization, oppression, resistance, and freedom.

Project Introduction

With this project, we aim to look beyond the mere recognition of the increase in female presence in literature. We wish to examine the many ways women are depicted and how these representations connect with broader social issues. How have female characterizations varied over time? How do these representations relate to social and cultural changes? What are the challenges and opportunities to writing female stories today?

This project is interdisciplinary, combining literary analysis with sociology. Throughout the project, students will examine samples of literature, comparing authors, time periods, and themes. They will discuss women's representation, considering gender, race, class, and sexuality issues. The idea is that students not only learn about literature but also develop critical and thinking skills, in addition to honing their team-working ability.

Practical Activity: "Female Portraits in Literature"

Project Objective:

Analyze the representation of the female figure in literature, paying close attention to its evolution over time and the reflections of sociocultural changes in these portraits. Students must provide an overview of the transformations of female characters in literature, from the classical era to the contemporary one.

Project Description:

Students will divide into teams of 3 to 5 people to develop in-depth research and analysis on selected literature works. The teams will receive a list of books from different literary periods that feature remarkable female characters. The study should cover a critical analysis of the characters considering their historical and sociocultural background as well as their roles in the plot.

Required Materials:

• Internet access for research and consulting support material.
• Physical or digital books for reading the selected literary works.
• Computer or other resource for writing the report.

Step by Step:

1. Teams and Division of Works: Students should form teams of 3 to 5 people. Each team will receive a list of literature works from different periods, ranging from classical antiquity to contemporary times featuring prominent female characters.

2. Reading the Works and Contextual Research: Students should read the works and do in-depth research on the historical and sociocultural context of the period in which they were written. They must also research the life and intentions of the author in representing female characters.

3. Critical Character Analysis: Based on their reading and research, students should do a critical analysis of the female characters, considering aspects such as personality, ambitions, conflicts, and roles in the plot. They must observe how these aspects reflect the historical and sociocultural context and how they evolved over time.

4. Writing the Report: After the analysis, students must write the report. In the report, students must:

   • Introduction: Contextualize the topic, its relevance and real-world application, as well as the purpose of this project.
   • Development: Explain the theory behind the representation of the female figure in literature, the methodology used, and the results.
   • Conclusions: Recap the main points, explaining the lessons learned and the conclusions drawn about the project.
   • Bibliography: List the used sources for the project, such as books, websites, videos, etc.

At the end of the project, students should achieve a deeper understanding of the evolution of female representations in literature and have developed significant skills such as time management, communication, problem-solving, creative thinking, and proactivity.
