Scientific Technical Vocabulary

Contextualization

The technical-scientific vocabulary in Spanish is an essential tool for effective and precise communication in the academic and professional world. Many of you, in a future university life or career, may at some point need to read, write, or discuss in Spanish about technical or scientific topics. Therefore, mastering this vocabulary is of great importance.

In the globalized world we live in, the Spanish language is highly relevant. It is the second most spoken language in the world in terms of number of native speakers and is the third most used language on the Internet. Furthermore, Spanish is the official language of 21 countries and is one of the six official languages of the United Nations.

Theoretical Introduction

The technical-scientific vocabulary varies greatly according to the area of knowledge. Therefore, instead of trying to cover all possible areas, in our project we will focus on four main fields: health, technology, environment, and economy. All of these fields are of great relevance in today's society and offer a diversity of terms and concepts that can be explored.

In the field of health, we will explore terms related to pathologies, medical procedures, anatomy, among others. In technology, students will encounter vocabulary related to computer science, artificial intelligence, robotics, and other current topics. Focused on the environment, we will address terms related to conservation, pollution, climate, and renewable energy. And in economics, we will discuss terms related to trade, finance, and macroeconomics.

It is important to note that learning technical-scientific vocabulary is not just about memorization. It is necessary to understand the context of the terms' usage, understand their definitions, and applications. Understanding technical-scientific vocabulary also involves the ability to correctly use these terms in text and speech.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: 'Journey to the World of Technical-Scientific Vocabulary'

Project Objective:

The project aims to deepen the knowledge of technical-scientific vocabulary in Spanish in the fields of health, technology, environment, and economy. Students will work in groups of 3 to 5 participants and will create a 'virtual tour' to present, explain, and contextualize technical concepts and terms in Spanish from these four areas.

Detailed Project Description:

For this task, each group will be assigned a focus area (Health, Technology, Environment, or Economy) and must research and compile a set of 15 to 20 important technical or scientific terms or concepts in the designated area. The group must then create a multimedia presentation (which can be in the form of a video, slide presentation, interactive website, etc.) where they will present and explain these terms.

The presentation should include clear and contextualized definitions of the chosen terms, examples of their use in sentences or real contexts, and interdisciplinary connections when applicable (for example, how a health term may be related to the economy, or how a technological term may relate to the environment).

Each group will have to dedicate a minimum of 12 hours to complete the project, including research, script development, presentation creation, and report writing.

Required Materials:

Students will need a computer with internet access, multimedia presentation creation tools (such as PowerPoint, Google Slides, Prezi, etc.), and a text editing program (such as Microsoft Word or Google Docs) for report writing.

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Completion:

  1. Group Formation and Area Selection: Students must form groups of 3 to 5 people and will randomly receive one of the four study areas.

  2. Research and Term Selection: Each group, based on the assigned area, must research and select 15 to 20 relevant technical or scientific terms.

  3. In-depth Understanding of Terms: For each selected term, the group must search for its complete definition, its usage context, and examples of how the term is used in text or speech.

  4. Creation of Presentation Script: With the research complete, the group must create a script for the presentation of the terms, considering the best way to present each term and its connections.

  5. Creation of Multimedia Presentation: Using the script as a guide, the group must create a multimedia presentation that explains and contextualizes each selected term.

  6. Report Writing: The group must write a detailed report on the project, following the report structuring guidelines described above.

Project Delivery:

The project delivery consists of the multimedia presentation created by the group and the written report.

In the presentation, each term must be clearly defined and contextualized, and include examples of use in sentences or real contexts. It is recommended to use images, graphics, or other visual aids to assist in term comprehension.

The written report must follow the proposed structure: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography. In the Introduction, students must explain the relevance of technical-scientific vocabulary and the project's importance. In the Development, they should detail the research methodology, presentation creation, and discuss the research results. The Conclusion should summarize the main points, explain the learnings obtained, and draw conclusions about the project. Finally, in the Bibliography, they should indicate the sources used for the project completion.
