Contextualization
Introduction
The Portuguese language is a complex system that allows for a wide variety of expressions and meanings. At the core of this system, we find the noun, the class of words that names beings, objects, feelings, concepts, among others.
It is crucial to understand and master the use of nouns for effective communication. In this project, we will focus on Gender Inflection and Degree Variation of Nouns. In gender inflection, nouns can be masculine or feminine, and such distinction can completely change the meaning of a sentence. Degree variation, on the other hand, refers to the intensity or size of the being or thing that the noun refers to, being classified into normal, augmentative, and diminutive degrees.
We can consider, then, that the rules of gender inflection and degree variation are an indispensable part of constructing discourse in Portuguese, and mastering them can significantly increase the precision and richness of our oral and written expressions.
Contextualization
As we look at the world around us, we realize that gender inflection and degree variation are present in all our daily interactions. They are used in timetables, restaurant menus, newspaper headlines, blogs, social media, and many others. They are also fundamental for effective and respectful communication, especially in professional contexts.
Furthermore, mastering these grammatical rules can open doors to understanding other languages, especially those that are Romance languages, such as Spanish and Italian, which have gender and degree inflection rules similar to Portuguese.
Practical Activity: Linguistic Dramaturgy
Objective
Develop a short theatrical play (around 15 to 20 minutes long) that explores the use of Gender Inflection and Degree Variation of Nouns.
Description
Each group will be responsible for creating a theater play that should incorporate elements of gender inflection and degree variation of nouns in a creative way, demonstrating a solid understanding of these concepts. The play can be of any genre (comedy, drama, suspense, etc) and should present a plot that in some way revolves around the use of language.
In addition to creating the play, each group must produce a written script, with the characters' lines and stage directions. In this script, the use and role of gender inflection and degree variation of nouns in the narrative should be highlighted.
Necessary Materials
- Paper and pen for script writing.
- Equipment for recording the play (can be a smartphone).
- Costume and set design resources as deemed necessary (not mandatory).
Step by Step
-
Brainstorming: Group members should gather ideas for the play, defining the plot, the characters, and how to incorporate gender inflection and degree variation of nouns into the story.
-
Write the Script: Once the idea is clear, the group should start writing the play script, detailing the scenes, the characters' lines, and the actions that will take place on stage. The script should highlight and explain the use of gender inflection and degree variation of nouns in different parts of the play.
-
Rehearse the Play: With the script in hand, the group should rehearse the play several times, switching roles if necessary, until the performance flows smoothly.
-
Record the Play: The group should record the theatrical play, either in video or just audio, following all established criteria.
-
Analysis and Reflection: After recording the play, the group should review the final work and reflect on how the concepts of gender inflection and degree variation were used. This will be the basis for the final report.
Project Delivery
-
Script: Each group must deliver the written script of the theatrical play, with a detailed analysis of the use of gender inflection and degree variation of nouns. Each scene where these concepts were applied should be highlighted and explained.
-
Video / Audio of the Play: The recording of the play must be delivered along with the script.
-
Final Report: In addition to the script and recording, each group must deliver a final report following the stipulated format: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography used. In the introduction, the relevance of correctly using gender inflection and degree variation of nouns in everyday language and the project's objective should be explained. In the development, students should present the theory used, detail the activity carried out and the methodology used, and present the results obtained. In the conclusion, the project's learnings and the importance of the studied concepts for language should be pointed out. And finally, in the bibliography, the materials consulted for the project's elaboration should be cited.
Remembering that the total duration of the work, including preparation, script writing, rehearsals, recording, and report writing, should take more than twelve hours per student.
