Verbs: Past Participle

Contextualization

Past participle in Spanish is a grammatical concept that allows us to express an action that has already happened, and it is much more common in Spanish than in Portuguese. The formation of the past participle is divided into two parts: regular verbs and irregular verbs. Regular verbs follow a formation rule, while irregular verbs have a specific form that must be memorized.

Regular verbs follow the following form for the past participle:

  • Verbs ending in ar: we replace the ending ar with ado (Examples: falado - hablado, amado - amado).
  • Verbs ending in er or ir: we replace the ending er/ir with ido (Examples: vivido - vivido, comido - comido). Irregular verbs, on the other hand, have specific forms in the past participle that must be memorized, such as ver - visto, hacer - hecho, and decir - dicho.

Spanish grammar is a universe to be explored, and the proper use of the past participle is one of its fundamental aspects. Moreover, mastering this topic can be a great advantage for those who wish to become fluent in the language. Understanding and correctly using the past participle not only enhances verbal skills but also improves writing, making sentences clearer and more understandable.

Spanish, being one of the most spoken languages in the world, has a significant impact on many aspects of academic and professional life. In the business world, the ability to communicate effectively in Spanish can open doors to career opportunities, while in academia, it can allow the exploration of a diverse range of literary and academic texts in Spanish.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Past Participles: A Journey through Spanish in History and Culture"

Project Objective:

The objective of this project is to allow students to apply their knowledge of the past participle in a real and playful scenario. Students will explore the use of the past participle in different cultural and historical contexts through the creation of a theatrical representation.

Detailed Project Description:

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members. Each group must choose a historical period from a Spanish-speaking country and create a theatrical representation, with at least ten minutes in duration, involving conversations and situations where the use of the past participle is essential.

The story must be original and demonstrate a clear understanding of the chosen historical period and the proper use of the past participle. Each student must have at least two lines of dialogue in the script. Additionally, students are encouraged to incorporate cultural elements such as music, dance, cuisine, etc. into their project.

Required Materials:

  1. Books, internet, and other resources for research.
  2. Paper and pen for script writing.
  3. Clothing and props for the theatrical representation.
  4. Camera for recording the play (can be a smartphone).

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution:

  1. Division into groups of 3 to 5 students.
  2. Research and selection of the historical period and country.
  3. Discussion and brainstorming about the play's plot.
  4. Script writing, containing dialogues with prominent use of the past participle.
  5. Script review and necessary adjustments.
  6. Rehearsal and recording of the play.
  7. Watching the recording, group discussion, and making necessary adjustments to acting or script.
  8. Final recording of the play.
  9. Writing the final report.

Project Deliverables:

Groups must deliver the final recording of the play and a written report.

The written report must have the following topics:

  1. Introduction: The student must contextualize the chosen historical period, the use of the past participle in the Spanish language, and the importance and application of this grammatical concept. Additionally, they must explain the relevance of the project for language learning.

  2. Development: The student must detail the process of creating the play, from the choice of the historical period to the final recording. They must explain how the experience of working in a group was, the division of tasks, and how collaboration contributed to the final result. They must also describe in detail the use of the past participle in the play and how the understanding of this grammatical concept contributed to the dialogue construction.

  3. Conclusions: The student must summarize the main points of the project, state the learnings obtained, the difficulties encountered, and how they were resolved. They can also reflect on the importance of the past participle in the Spanish language and how this project contributed to a deeper understanding of this topic.
