Interrogative Pronouns

Contextualization

Learning a new language involves not only memorizing words, but also understanding grammatical structures that enable effective communication. In this perspective, interrogative pronouns are among the fundamental elements for constructing questions and, consequently, meaningful dialogues. In the Spanish language, some of the most commonly used interrogative pronouns are ¿Qué?, ¿Quién? and ¿Cómo?, which are equivalent to “What?”, “Who?” and “How?” in English, for example.

Interrogative pronouns fulfill an important function of marking direct and indirect questions. They not only initiate an interrogation, but also guide the response, specifying the type of information we seek to obtain. For example, if we ask "¿Dónde está el banco?" (“Where is the bank?”), we are expecting the answer to be a place. If we ask "¿Qué hora es?" (“What time is it?”), the expected answer is an indication of time.

Introduction

In the Spanish language, as in English, there are different interrogative pronouns, each with its specific function and use. Knowledge about these particularities is essential for the development of communication skills in a new language, allowing us to express doubts, curiosities, and obtain the desired information.

Interrogative pronouns, in addition to marking a question, also establish a type of interaction between people in dialogue. They open up space for sharing information, ideas, feelings and experiences. As such, they are essential in the construction of social and cultural relationships, being present in diverse contexts, from domestic to professional, passing through academic and recreational.

To expand studies on interrogative pronouns in the Spanish language, I suggest consulting the following sources:

These resources will provide a solid foundation for understanding the use of interrogative pronouns in the Spanish language.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Questioning the World in Spanish

Project Objective

To expand the understanding of interrogative pronouns and their correct use in Spanish, through the creation of a fictional interview video. In addition to linguistic learning, students will develop planning, creativity, teamwork and presentation skills.

Detailed Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members. Each group will be responsible for producing a video between 10 and 15 minutes long, entitled "Questioning the World in Spanish". The video will consist of a series of fictional interviews conducted by the students themselves, where various interrogative pronouns in Spanish should be used.

The environment, characters and theme of the interviews are at the discretion of the group, allowing them to use their creativity to create an interesting plot. The most important thing is that during the interviews, diverse questions are asked, using the interrogative pronouns in Spanish correctly.

Required Materials

  • Camera or smartphone with video recording capability;
  • Clothing and props for characterization (if necessary);
  • Suitable place for recording;
  • Video editing software (there are several free options available online);
  • Computer for video editing.

Step by Step Guide

  1. Group formation and role definition: each group must define who will be responsible for recording, editing, acting, creating the script among other roles.

  2. Study of interrogative pronouns in Spanish: before starting to assemble the script, it is important that all members of the group master the use of interrogative pronouns in Spanish. I suggest consulting the sources indicated in the Introduction section.

  3. Script creation: students should write a script for the video, clearly marking the questions that will be asked and the interrogative pronouns that will be used.

  4. Video recording: students should record the video according to the script created. It is important to remember to keep the duration between 10 and 15 minutes.

  5. Video editing: the video should be edited, ensuring that the audio and image are clear and that all scenes are well connected.

  6. Report writing: each group must then prepare a report on the project, following the structure indicated in the introduction of this document. This report should detail all stages of the project, from planning to the completion of the video.

The deliverables of the project are the final video and the report. Both items must be delivered by the stipulated deadline of one month from the start of the project. The videos will be shown in the classroom, providing a moment of socialization and collective learning.

Regarding the written report, it will be evaluated considering grammatical correctness, structure, clarity in the presentation of information and critical reflection on the project. It is important that students clearly explain in the report how the interrogative pronouns were used during the interviews and what the effect of this use was on the interaction with the interviewees. In addition, it is essential that students connect their practical activities with the theory on interrogative pronouns in Spanish.
