Contextualization

Phonetics and Phonology are fundamental areas of linguistic study, the science that investigates the structure and functioning of natural languages. While Phonetics studies the physical aspects of speech sounds—that is, how they are produced, transmitted, and perceived—Phonology studies speech sounds from the point of view of their role in the linguistic system, that is, how they function in language to differentiate the meanings of words. And that is precisely the focus of this project: Phoneme Classification.

Phonemes are the minimum sound units that can distinguish words in a given language. In the Portuguese language, phonemes can be of three types: vowels, semivowels, and consonants. Distinguishing and correctly identifying phonemes in a word is a basic skill for understanding how language works.

Phoneme Classification, therefore, is an essential tool for studying any language. In the context of the Portuguese language, phoneme classification can also contribute to the understanding of phenomena such as graphic accentuation, the use of certain letters in writing, among others.

In the real world, the ability to identify and classify phonemes can have practical applications in learning foreign languages, in the production of didactic materials, in the creation of speech recognition software, among others. In addition, the ability to classify phonemes is also a competence required in certain public entrance exams, such as those in the Education area, for example.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: SoundSleuths

Project Objective:

The objective of the project is to develop an educational game, where students will identify and correctly classify the phonemes present in a list of words.

Detailed Project Description:

The game proposes that the group of students become a team of "SoundSleuths", seeking to decipher the mysteries of phonetics in a series of words. Thus, using their knowledge of phoneme classification, the students will have to identify and correctly classify the phonemes of each word.

Materials Required:

• Paper and pen for notes
• Whiteboard or flipchart
• Calculator (optional)
• Computer with internet access

Detailed Step-by-Step Instructions for the Activity:

1. Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members.
2. Each group will receive a list of words whose phonemes must be classified.
3. The group must, in collaboration, identify and classify the phonemes of each word in the list. The classification should consider whether the phoneme is a vowel, semivowel, or consonant.
4. Students may use the suggested sources to study and complete the task.
5. The work must be completed within one week.
6. After completing the practical activity, each group must produce a detailed report, explaining the process of carrying out the activity and presenting and discussing the results obtained.

  1. Introduction: Explanation of the relevance and practical application of the topic, as well as the objective of the project.
  2. Development: Brief theoretical explanation on phoneme classification and a detailed account of how the group carried out the activity, the methodology used, and a presentation and discussion of the results obtained.
  3. Conclusions: Recapitulation of the main points of the project, the lessons learned, and the conclusions drawn about phoneme classification.
  4. Bibliography used: Indication of the sources on which the group based itself to carry out the project.

Students should be aware that the activity serves not only to assess their technical knowledge of phoneme classification, but also their teamwork skills, such as: time management, communication, problem solving, creative thinking, proactivity, etc.
