Essential Terms of the Sentence: Subject

Context

The subject is an essential element in the structure of the sentence, as it is the term that indicates who acts or suffers action in the sentence. It can be classified into five types: simple subject, compound subject, hidden subject, indeterminate subject, and non-existent subject. Often, the correct identification of the subject is essential for the proper understanding of the meaning of a sentence.

Theoretical Introduction

In the Portuguese language, the structure of a sentence is composed of essential terms, among which the subject stands out. The subject is the term in the sentence that performs or suffers an action, and it is essential to give meaning to the sentence. It can be a word, a phrase or an expression that refers to the verb. To identify the subject of a sentence, one tip is to ask the verb "who?" or "what?".

The five types of subject are: simple subject (when the sentence has a single nucleus), compound subject (when the sentence has more than one nucleus), hidden subject (when the subject is not explicit in the sentence, but can be easily identified), indeterminate subject (when it is not possible to determine who performs the action) and sentence without a subject (when the sentence does not have a subject, usually when the verb is impersonal).

Importance and Applications in the Real World

Language is a fundamental part of human communication and understanding the elements that make up a sentence is essential to communicate ideas accurately and effectively. Understanding the concept and classifications of subject allows not only a better understanding of written and spoken texts, but also improves the ability of written and oral expression.

In addition, the correct identification and classification of the subject can be crucial in several practical situations, such as drafting legal documents, journalistic texts, academic articles, among others. In entrance exams, for example, the mastery of this concept is often required, whether in objective questions or in writing.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Syntax Detectives: Discovering the Subject"

Project Objective

The main objective of this project is to improve students' ability to identify and classify the type of subject in different types of texts. By the end of the project, students will be able to understand the function of the subject in the sentence and classify it correctly.

Detailed Project Description

Groups will be challenged to become "syntax detectives", responsible for investigating a series of texts provided by the teacher (or selected by themselves, according to defined criteria) and identifying the type of subject present in each one.

The texts can be excerpts from books, news from newspapers, phrases from songs, poems or even sentences created by the students.

Necessary Materials

  • Texts selected for analysis
  • Notebook for notes
  • Pens or pencils
  • Books or online resources for consultation

Detailed Step-by-Step

Step 1 - Formation of groups of 3 to 5 students.

Step 2 - Study of the concept and types of subject based on the recommended references and the teacher's explanations.

Step 3 - Selection of the texts to be analyzed. The texts can be selected by the teacher or by the students themselves, following pre-established criteria.

Step 4 - Analysis of the selected texts. Each group must identify the subjects present in the texts and classify them correctly.

Step 5 - Writing the report, following the topics: Introduction, Development, Conclusions and Bibliography used.

Project Delivery:

After analyzing the texts and identifying the subjects, the groups must prepare a detailed report of the activity, containing:

Introduction: Contextualization about the theme and about the activity developed, highlighting its relevance and application in the real world.

Development: Detailed description of the process of analyzing the texts, including some examples of sentences analyzed and explanation about the type of subject identified in each one. In this part, the students should also discuss the difficulties encountered and the strategies adopted to overcome them.

Conclusions: Reflection on what was learned and the insights obtained throughout the project. The groups should discuss how this activity contributed to the understanding of the concept and classification of subject.

Bibliography used: Citation of the bibliographic references and/or online resources used during the project.

The estimated time for the project is two to four hours per student, and the deadline for submitting the report is one week.
