Subordinating Conjunctions: Compound Period by Subordination and Substantive Subordinate Clauses

Context

Theoretical Introduction

The Portuguese language is rich and complex, and among its many components are subordinating conjunctions and substantive subordinate clauses. Understanding these elements is crucial to improve the ability to write clearly, coherently, and attractively, as well as to help enhance the interpretative capacity of texts.

Subordinating conjunctions are words that link two clauses, so that one of them (the subordinate clause) depends on the other (main clause) to make sense. They are classified according to the type of relationship they establish between these clauses: cause, consequence, condition, comparison, concession, purpose, time, proportion, manner, and doubt.

Subordinate substantive clauses are those that function as a noun in relation to the main clause. They can perform functions such as subject, direct object, indirect object, nominal complement, among others. Subordinate substantive clauses are divided into three types: subjective, direct object, and indirect object.

Context

Subordinating conjunctions and subordinate substantive clauses play a fundamental role in the construction of a rich and expressive text. They allow authors to express complex ideas concisely and effectively, as well as to promote emphasis and gradation to certain parts of the text.

In a digital era dominated by written communication, the ability to write effectively is increasingly important. Furthermore, mastering these aspects of the Portuguese language helps in preparing for important exams such as the ENEM and college entrance exams, as they are recurrent in these evaluations.

Activity

Activity Title: The Art of Conjunctions - A Journey through Subordinate Clauses.

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to provide students with a practical and creative experience related to the use of subordinating conjunctions and subordinate substantive clauses in the Portuguese language.

Detailed Project Description

The groups of students will create a play that must contain at least ten scenes. In each scene, they should use subordinating conjunctions and subordinate substantive clauses explicitly and creatively. The plays should be recorded in a video of up to 15 minutes.

Required Materials

  1. Paper and pen for writing the play's script.
  2. Books or digital materials for research and consultation.
  3. Video camera or smartphone for recording.
  4. Space for rehearsal and recording of the play.
  5. Costume and scenography items, within each group's possibilities.

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

  1. Each group will be responsible for creating an original script for the play, which must incorporate the use of subordinating conjunctions and subordinate substantive clauses. The script should be divided into scenes, and each scene should contain at least one example of a subordinating conjunction and a subordinate substantive clause.

  2. Once the play's script is defined, students should cast the characters, assigning each role in the presentation.

  3. Students should then rehearse the play and, simultaneously, prepare any costume and scenography materials they consider necessary.

  4. After rehearsals, the play should be recorded on video and edited. For editing, students can use any video editing software they have available.

  5. After recording the play, each group member should write a report, explaining how subordinating conjunctions and subordinate substantive clauses were used during the play.

Project Delivery

In addition to the video of the play, students should deliver a written document, reporting on the project experience, which should include the following topics:

  1. Introduction: students should contextualize the theme, its relevance and real-world application, as well as the objective of this project.

  2. Development: students should explain the theory behind the project's central theme, detail the activity, indicate the methodology used, and finally present and discuss the results obtained. In this topic, it is important for students to demonstrate an understanding of how and why subordinating conjunctions and subordinate substantive clauses were used in each scene.

  3. Conclusion: students should conclude the work by summarizing its main points, explaining the learnings obtained, and drawing conclusions about the project.

  4. Bibliography: students should indicate the sources they relied on to work on the project, such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

All those involved in the task should participate in writing the document, which should encompass the work of the entire group. The presentation of the video and the document is as important as its production, so students should ensure that the final result is clear, cohesive, organized, and well-founded.
