Accessory Terms of the Sentence: Adnominal Complement, Adverbial Complement, Apposition, and Vocative

Contextualization

In the context of the Portuguese language, syntax is the part of our grammar that studies the arrangement of words in sentences and of sentences in discourse, as well as their connection and logical relation. Understanding how these parts come together and function is essential to enhance our communication skills, whether in speech or writing. In this project, we will focus on the accessory terms of the sentence: the adnominal adjunct, the adverbial adjunct, the appositive, and the vocative.

Key Concepts

  • Adnominal Adjunct: This term is responsible for qualifying or determining a noun, expressing ideas such as the characteristic of being, possession, origin, destination, among others. They can be adjectives, adjective phrases, adjective pronouns, and articles.

  • Adverbial Adjunct: In turn, this has the function of modifying the verb to express circumstances, such as time, place, manner, cause, etc. It is represented in the sentence by an adverb or an adverbial phrase.

  • Appositive: This is a term that joins another to explain or specify it better. It appears to highlight or detail an aspect of the noun.

  • Vocative: This is a separate element used to call or address the listener or reader. It has no syntactic connection with the sentence.

Importance and Application of Accessory Terms

Having a deep knowledge of the accessory terms of the sentence not only increases our linguistic competence but also improves our ability to critically analyze texts. On a more practical level, this knowledge helps us write more eloquently, whether in an academic article, a work report, a school essay, or even in everyday emails and messages.

Furthermore, these terms play fundamental roles in creating meaning and structuring a sentence. Understanding how they work enhances our understanding of the language and enables us to use it more effectively and precisely.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "The Narrative Accessories"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to allow students to explore the use of accessory terms of the sentence in a practical context, so they can identify and apply these concepts effectively. This work requires collaboration, creativity, and writing, research, and analysis skills.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members. Each group will be tasked with selecting, analyzing, and rewriting a scene from a book, movie, or TV series, highlighting the application of accessory terms of the sentence (adnominal adjunct, adverbial adjunct, appositive, and vocative).

Required Materials

  1. Books, movies, or TV series for analysis.
  2. Computer with internet access.
  3. Notepad or word processing software.
  4. Camera or smartphone for video recording (optional).

Detailed Step-by-Step Guide for Activity Execution

Step 1: Divide into groups of 3 to 5 students.

Step 2: Each group should choose a scene from a book, movie, or TV series.

Step 3: Watch or read the chosen scene and make a detailed analysis of the application of accessory terms of the sentence. Identify and classify all adnominal adjuncts, adverbial adjuncts, appositives, and vocatives that appear in the scene.

Step 4: Rewrite the scene, maintaining the original essence but emphasizing the use of accessory terms of the sentence. Be very creative!

Step 5: Each group should write a detailed report, following the guidelines below:

Introduction: Provide context for the chosen work - the book, movie, or TV series - and the selected scene. Explain the relevance of accessory terms of the sentence and the project's objective.

Development: Explain in detail what the accessory terms of the sentence are, based on your research. Describe the activity, explaining step by step what was done. Present the original scene and the rewritten scene, highlighting the changes made and explaining why they were made. Discuss the results, comparing the characterization of the characters, the description of the environment, and the narrative in the two versions of the scene.

Conclusion: Reflect on what you learned from the project. Do you understand the accessory terms of the sentence better now? How did this activity help improve your language skills? What were the challenges and how did you overcome them?

Bibliography: List all the sources you used to carry out this project, whether to understand the accessory terms of the sentence, to choose the scene, or to rewrite it.

Step 6 (optional): If possible, students can record the reenactment of the rewritten scene and include the video as supplementary material.

Project Deliverables

Students must submit the complete report, with all the detailed sections above. Additionally, they must include the original scene and the rewritten scene. If possible, they should also include the video of the reenactment of the rewritten scene.

The report should reflect the collaborative work of the students, showing a clear understanding of the accessory terms of the sentence and a creative use of these terms in rewriting the scene. The report should also demonstrate time management skills, clear communication, and problem-solving abilities.
