Subordinating Conjunctions: Compound Period by Subordination and Substantive Subordinate Clauses

Contextualization

Portuguese, like many languages, is a complex language full of nuances and peculiarities that enrich the way we express our thoughts and ideas. Among these characteristics are substantive subordinate clauses, which are essential parts for building a rich and well-articulated discourse.

They work as a noun within a sentence and can play different syntactic roles: subject, direct object, indirect object, nominal complement, subject predicative, or apposition. There are three types of substantive subordinate clauses: subjective, objective, and nominal complements.

In the context of communication, knowing how to use these different forms of the clause is crucial for the effectiveness of the transmission of ideas. Not only that, but the correct use of these structures helps to make writing and speech clearer and more objective, thus enabling a better understanding of what is being communicated.

Introduction

Subordinate conjunctions play a fundamental role in organizing periods composed by subordination. They act as connecting links between the main clause and the subordinate clause, establishing a relationship of syntactic dependence between the two.

Understanding these structures is of vital importance because it allows language to be used more precisely and expressively, enabling clearer and more effective communication. By expanding knowledge in these areas, it's possible to express oneself in a more sophisticated and precise way, essential skills both in everyday communication and in more formal contexts, such as writing academic or professional texts.

This knowledge can be applied to the textual construction and interpretation of texts, in informal speech, or even in other languages that have similar systems. It is an essential tool that contributes to the understanding and formation of opinions based on clear and well-structured arguments.

For a more in-depth study, we recommend the following references:

  • Nova Gramática da Língua Portuguesa, by Rocha Lima (in Portuguese);
  • Manual de Sintaxe, by Letícia Maria Sicuro Correa and Francisco Martins (in Portuguese);
  • No YouTube, the channel "GramáticaEmVídeo" by professor Fábio Alves (in Portuguese);
  • No site "Linguee", which compares texts in Portuguese and other languages, allowing a better understanding of linguistic structures (in several languages).

Remember: learning is a continuous process and the more we master the tools of language, the more effective we will be in using it. So, let's do this!

Practical Activity

Title of the activity: "Understanding and creating with subordinate conjunctions and substantive subordinate clauses"

Project Objective:

The main objective of this activity is to explore and deepen the students' understanding of subordinate conjunctions and substantive subordinate clauses, in addition to stimulating cooperation and teamwork.

Detailed Project Description:

Students, divided into groups of 3 to 5 members, should produce an "Illustrated Guide to Subordinate Conjunctions and Substantive Subordinate Clauses". This material should be done creatively, and may include illustrations, charts, tables, examples, word games, and any other ideas that help make the content clearer and more enjoyable.

It's essential that the guide addresses:

  • The definition and classification of substantive subordinate clauses; - The role of subordinate conjunctions; - Practical examples of how and when to use these concepts in writing and speaking.

Required Materials:

To carry out this activity, the following will be required: - Textbooks and grammar books; - Internet for research; - Paper, pens, colored pencils, markers, and other office supplies for preparing the "Illustrated Guide"; - Text editing software (optional), in case you choose to carry out the activity digitally.

Detailed step-by-step instructions for carrying out the activity:

1. Divide the class into groups of 3 to 5 students. 2. Each group should start by researching and studying the proposed topic, using the material indicated in the introduction, in addition to others that they find relevant. 3. After the research, students should discuss in their groups and outline the layout and content of the guide, so that the concepts and examples of the use of subordinate conjunctions and substantive subordinate clauses are clearly presented. 4. From the outline, the group should begin producing the "Illustrated Guide", either physically (on paper) or digitally. 5. During the creation of the guide, it's important to validate the information, keep the content clear, and make the material visually appealing. 6. Upon completion of the guide, each group should write a report in accordance with the instructions given above. This report should detail the process of creating the guide, the function and application of substantive subordinate clauses and conjunctions, the relevance of teamwork, and the lessons learned.

Project Deliverables:

Students should deliver two main items at the end of the project: the "Illustrated Guide to Subordinate Conjunctions and Substantive Subordinate Clauses" and the project report.

The guide is the product of all the practical work, where students applied the theoretical knowledge acquired. It should be clear, accurate, and aesthetically pleasing, becoming a useful reference material for understanding the subject.

The project report is where students will describe the process of carrying out the teamwork, highlight the lessons learned, and conclude on the relevance of the subject. As this is a writing exercise, it is important that the report respects the suggested structure (Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography), and correctly applies subordinate conjunctions and substantive subordinate clauses as practical examples of their use in the text.

Students will have one month to complete these deliverables from the project start date.
