Word Structure: Root, Thematic Vowel, Theme, Endings, Affixes and Linking Vowel / Consonant

Contextualization

The structure of words is one of the most important topics when studying the grammar of any language. Understanding the root, the thematic vowel, the theme, the endings, the affixes, and the linking vowel or consonant provides the key to deciphering not only the meaning but the construction and function of words in the Portuguese language.

By studying the parts that make up words, we go beyond learning spelling and grammar; we acquire greater linguistic awareness, which allows us to manipulate the language more effectively and creatively, both in written and oral production.

Importance of the Theme

This knowledge allows us to dissect words to their most fundamental level, revealing their etymological roots and their transformations over time. This is particularly useful when we come across unknown words - knowledge of the structure of words can give us clues about their meaning, even if we have never seen them before.

From writing texts and arguments to understanding complex texts, learning foreign languages and even in programming language, the study of word structure is an essential tool.

Practical Activity

Title of the activity: Unveiling the Structure of Words

Project objective

The objective of this project is to deepen the study of the structure of words, through practical activities that involve collaboration, research, creativity, and oral presentation.

Detailed description of the project

The groups, composed of 3 to 5 students, will be responsible for creating an "Illustrated Etymological Dictionary", which should contain the description and analysis of the structure of the selected words: root, thematic vowel, theme, endings, affixes, and linking vowel/consonant.

In addition, each word must be accompanied by illustrations that represent its meaning and its etymological origin. The students will be free to choose how they want to illustrate the words, using creativity and innovation.

Necessary materials

The materials necessary for the project are:

  • Notebook or A4 sheets for creating the Dictionary;
  • Colored pens, colored pencils, markers;
  • Research materials: Portuguese textbooks, dictionaries, access to the internet for research;
  • Graphic editing software, if you wish to digitize the Dictionary.

Detailed step-by-step instructions for carrying out the activity

  1. Formation of groups.
  2. Decision on the words to be studied (between 10 and 15 words).
  3. Research on the structure of each chosen word: identification of the root, thematic vowel, theme, endings, affixes, linking vowel/consonant.
  4. Creation of the definition of each word based on its identified parts.
  5. Research on the etymological origin of each word and annotation of this information in the Dictionary.
  6. Creation of illustrations that represent the meaning and origin of each word.
  7. Organization of the words, their definitions, and illustrations in Dictionary format.
  8. Presentation of the Dictionary to the class.

Project Deliverables and Final Report

In addition to the "Illustrated Etymological Dictionary", the groups must prepare a report that includes the following topics:

Introduction

The students should explain the objective of the work, the importance of studying the structure of words, and how this understanding can contribute to the learning of the Portuguese language and to effective communication.

Development

In this section, the students should describe in detail the process of creating the Illustrated Etymological Dictionary: selection of words, research carried out, decisions made during the production of the illustrations, methodology used, and results obtained.

Conclusion

The students should explain what they learned from carrying out the project, how it allowed them to deepen their study of the Portuguese language, the importance of teamwork, and the skills they developed.

Bibliography

Indication of the sources used for the research: textbooks, dictionaries, websites, videos, etc.

The work will be delivered within one month from the date of presentation of the project.
