Understanding these differences is essential to understanding how language works and how it is used to express identity, belonging to a group, and social position. Furthermore, understanding these varieties will help develop effective communication skills and respect for differences.

Furthermore, linguistic prejudice, which is the act of judging people by the way they speak, is a form of discrimination that is widely spread and often ignored. Understanding linguistic diversity and its causes can help combat this prejudice.

These concepts are applicable to everyday life, in social interactions, online and face-to-face conversations, at work, school, or anywhere else where language is used to communicate.

Activity Title: Voices of Diversity

Project Objective

Investigate, analyze, and present on the linguistic varieties in the Portuguese language, with an emphasis on how they reflect the social and cultural diversity of Brazil.

Detailed Project Description

Students, in groups of 3 to 5, will select and study a specific linguistic variety in the Portuguese language. This variety can be regional, social, or stylistic.

Each group will research the chosen variety, collecting examples that show its specific characteristics and uses. These examples can be excerpts from songs, poems, conversations, text messages, etc.

The goal is for students to identify the characteristics of the chosen variety, understand the reasons for its existence, and discuss issues of linguistic prejudice associated with it.

Necessary Materials

• Internet access for research
• Paper and pen for notes
• Presentation applications (PowerPoint, Google Slides, etc.)

Activity Step by Step

1. Group Formation: Students should organize themselves into groups of 3 to 5 people.

2. Selection of Linguistic Variety: Each group will select a linguistic variety of the Portuguese language to study.

3. Research: Each group will research the chosen linguistic variety. They should look for:

   • The origin and historical-social context of the variety
   • Examples of the use of this variety in everyday life
   • Discussions on linguistic prejudice associated with this variety

4. Material Production: After the research, the group should produce a presentation material. This material can be a slide, a video, a podcast, a digital poster, etc. The material should contain:

   • An informative summary of the linguistic variety
   • Examples of the use of this variety
   • A discussion on the issues of linguistic prejudice associated with the variety

5. Presentation: Each group will present their work to the class. The presentation should last between 10 to 15 minutes, and all group members should participate.

6. Writing the Project Document: The group will then consolidate their findings and learnings into a project document. This document should contain the following sections:

   • Introduction: Contextualization of the theme and the choice of linguistic variety.
   • Development: Detailed description of the researched linguistic variety, the theory behind it, and the methodology used for the research.
